They are usually referred to as an orbital. Make sure you practice first, as it is very easy to burn into the paint.

I heard a Porter Cable one is really nice too. It's cheaper by like $15 as well. Any differences?

The faster you go the bigger the chance of burning through the paint.
Doesn't sound like you know exactly what polishing and buffing does. Read up on it.

Yeah I don't know anything about detailing. Any sites that could point me in the right direction?
I figured 12,000 OPM's would be overkill. I was just asking in general why a 12,000 OPM cheap name brand orbital polisher is $40 as opposed to a 2500-6500 OPM quality name brand orbital polisher that is $150+.

If anything, I plan on starting really light and working it harder and harder until I get it down. Hopefully not too hard where I burn through the paint but I'm hoping that doesn't happen.

You know, I was just thinking about going out tonight to buy a buffer, so this thread came at a perfect time. Then I saw your post and remembered, I feel the same exact way! I rarely wash my car, the second I do, I end up taking it off road and getting it muddy. lol

Yeah with all the rain lately, I most definitely wouldn't be so thrilled about spending a whole day detailing my car just to have it get dirty again the next day by rain. Main reason why I want to do it though is to get swirls out and try to restore my paint a little bit.

I think you guys might find this website/forum very useful, I know it helped me out alot when I had alot of questions about how to properly detail/wash/wax my cars.

This link covers car polishes, the different steps in polishing, hand vs mechanical, as well as different mechanical devices.

Its a good forum to belong to, they are some real freaks over there that really go nuts over trying to get that perfect show shine. Tons of info to read. Hope that helps you guys out.

Because the 12,000 OPM one probably is cheap and doesn't have the safety features that some polishers / buffers AKA orbitals offer. You get what you pay for.
When you polish and wax a car, your actually taking clearcoat OFF, that's why alot of guys use digital equipment to read how much paint they have to work with. Each pass is taking off around 2-3 microns, which, doesn't sound like alot, but some cars only have 60-80 microns of paint.

I read the first link just now. Great read . I knew some of it already but it gave insight on information about detailing I've been wanting to learn.

Gotcha. Yeah that digital reader for the paint looked familiar after reading about that guy who bought the E36 M3 and detailed it. Saw that little tool in the thread.
