Default Just curious, RPMs you guys upshift on?

Assuming your driving the EM2/5 speed/1.7L/4cyl civic.

With maximum fuel efficiency and clutch preservation in mind, when do you guys upshift?

...and are you on/off the clutch? Do any of you ride the clutch at all?

I've always shifted where it felt smoothest, but I have a couple friends who really pop the clutch, and some who really ride it. Just made me curious as to how some others do it.

I don't want to beat my daily like that tbh.

I shift at around 3k, and cruise at about 2k.

If I'm in the neighborhood or in traffic it's usually pretty low, but other than that I'd say anywhere from 3500-redline.

As do I.

Uhh.. what I mean by popping it and riding it; not sure if your being rhetorical/sarcastic, so I'll describe it anyway.

Pop it: lifting your foot extremely fast, with enough throttle to throw it into gear.. not always the smoothest. Usually causes some tire-squeelage. Can't imagine it's good on the gears either.

Ride it:
there's not really any reason to ride the clutch.. happens most often when:

1. People are trying to double clutch into second, but have no idea what they're doing.. so all their doing is burning clutch & having seemingly better (but worse on the clutch) transitions between gears.

2. when people are afraid of stalling out.. on hill, or just in general. People usually ride the clutch after stalling out, out of fear of stalling out again.

3. people whom are obsessed with shifting smoothly, but have no idea what their doing.. they usually "ride" and burn the clutch.

Anyway, I was just wondering what the norm around here was. I'm figuring out where/how to revmatch in my '01 EX coupe right now.

Do you guys pot it and lock it?

If you want good gas mileage then shift around 2000-2200. And when youre downshifting to accelerate hard, right before you throw it into gear just tap the gas so it revs up to about 3500 and you should be fine

swell I don't slam gear upshifting, you just shift between 2500-3500 daily and its smooth as butter..

when downshifting let the rpm fall to about 2k, give a little gas and downshift.. smooth

powershift / heel-toe = not so smooth

i do mine a little differently.
i go about 0-10 in first
10-20 in second and so on. i usually get to about 2200 rpms and shift down to about 1700

if i have to cruise around 35 ill usually shift to fifth anyways, also around 25 cruise i will shift up to fourth.

i dont really pay attention to these exact speeds i can just feel it you just gotta train yourself

I'd like to hear the logic behind that as well.

I drive the same car as you, for riding smooth I shift around 3200 and cruise at about 2000 in 5th for fuel efficieny, pop it into neutral if your going down hills often to save gas too

35 in 5th seems ok if cruising. I think i cruise in 4th at 25. I don't accelerate at these speeds in said gears but just cruise. So for me probably 1st 0-10 : 2nd 10-22 : 3rd 22-36 : 4th 36-48 this is pretty general and as i stated if i'm just cruising i'll use a higher gear sometimes.
