Alright so here's the deal... I want a B18B in my car. And from what I understand, since I have a 99, I have an OBD2B so I would need an OBD2B to not run into emission law problems and be sailin smooth.

I'm not sure how strict NYS is but I'm pretty sure it's strict. But from what a few other people have told me, I could get any OBD2 B18B as long as I used a 99-00 ECU and I would be fine (which makes no sense to me but whatever).

Can someone enlighten me with more swap info, more specifically with emissions? I really would prefer having a swap and not run into problems with the law and such.

edit - oh this is off topic. It's 2:20AM and i've killed myslef /w no sleep for thepast few days cuz of school. gimme a brkea. im heraa tireda

I am tired as balls... None of it will make sense to me. I'll read it later when I wake up. Thanks.

I read them and they still don't answer my question really... I've been told that 96-98 is OBD2A and 99-00 is OBD2B. Now I know in general they make sure that 96+ are OBD2 when doing the emission tests and all but do I specifically have to have a matching OBD motor for my car? (IE - I have OBD2B currently so I need a OBD2B motor and not A)

Like I said, I heard from a few that all I would need is a OBD2B ECU and I could use any 96-00 B18B and wouldn't run into problems with emission laws. But I wasn't sure.

If your ECU is OBD2b, ANY OBD2 motor will work. Its the ECU that really needs to match. And honestly, that really dosent matter. As long as its OBD2, you should be set. You can use a OBD2a motor with an OBD2b ECU and vice-versa. As long as your not throwing a CEL in NY state, and have a cat. converter on your car, you will pass emissions. :thumbs up

Ah nice. So now I don't have to worry about finding a 99-00 B18B lol. Just need the 2B ECU and I'm set eh?

Thanks man. I was hoping someone from new york would chime in that had knowledge. Now to find myself a relatively cheap B18B complete swap . Then a B16A tranny.

I am glad this state hasnt done anything like that yet. My CRX would never pass.

You can find B18B's in 1999-2001 years all day long... they're rather expensive because most are young and still have low mileage for USDM motors. Make your life easy. Buy a wrecked teggy, that way you have the mileage of the motor on the guage cluster and you will have 4312536290374753 extra parts to put in the civic.

If I could find a wrecked teggy that cost as much as an average B18B swap then yeah I'd be all over it. Otherwise, a swap is all I need and a B16A tranny.
