Just a little bit of an upgrade HAHAHA. The old unit had an install date written on it 1995!

Pinstripe must die!
Many Many hours later and a lot of automotive goo gone
http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/9092/img1495ej7.jpg
All of the interior pieces have been removed except the dash and headliner. All the mold has been scrubbed out. (It smells much better) Every interior panel was cleaned labeled and hardware was bagged. New head unit is wired and installed. Front bumper and headlights are off. I tried a little DIY on the headlights and I didn't like the way they came out I will bought some. I started taking the grinder to the surface rust in the engine and it seams to be cleaning up nice.
Does anyone know a good way to remove the excessive caulking all over the engine bay?
Turns out someone pulled part of the door seals off and never put them back in the track so that explains some of the mold. I think the rest is from loose tail lights. New carpet, mats and trunk carpet has been ordered.
Most of us eat in our cars every now and then. But who eats wings in their car? come on! I also took some crayon of the interior and found a who bunch of little girls hair clips hahaha. This car will have a very different life now that it is mine!
I either want to start with a B18B wait a while then boost or go big with an H22. I love torque now that I have a g35! So bigger is better. I have been reading a TON on the H22 swap and despite anything scary it sounds soo good. I do not race so I want my power to be more for the streets.
I already have the VTEC bug from my first car which was a J30A1 accord coupe so going B18B might suck until I add boost.
So it seams to be reasonable to say I could source a B18B complete swap for around $2,000 and get a t3/t4 turbo kit with a nice staniless manifold for around $2,500 minus management and tuning?
How it is looking now

http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/5526/img1584sq9.jpg
Had to put something on the car instead of just ripping stuff off. These look much nicer! Plus I wanted to see if new tail light seals tightened down would solve some leaking issues

http://www.manchestermotorsports.com
This dealership is extremely nice and their parts department is great. Some of the guys there know a ton. They also have a few nice JDM parts
Need ideas on 16" silver rims with a polished lip
this is one set I found. Like them but I hate to run a wheel that is bad quality. I know nothing about ALT. Anyone know them?

or Silver Rota GT3s

I thought I would start adding some DIY info to my build up. It might be stupid easy stuff for most but some people might find it helpful.
Last nights trip to Manchester Motorsports cost me $531
Parts Purchased
-OEM JDM thin side moldings
-OEM antenna
-OEM ITR Shift Boot
-OEM sun visor and clip
-Depo chrome housing headlights -amber

Antenna Replacement
My whole interior is pretty much ripped apart so I didn't have to remove the panel below the column. I think this is just 3 or 4 screws and pull to remove. Here you can see where the antenna cable connects to the extension wire coming off the back of the head unit.
http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/9544/img1609smallsk8.jpg
Unplug this cable at the junction
Next take some thin rope and attach it to the line going up to the antenna. You can see I wrapped everything up so it was smooth and nothing would catch.
http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/2196/img1608smallfv0.jpg
Unscrew the 2 screws on the top of the antenna then pull it right out. Don't go to fast because if something catches you want to be able to back it up and try again.
http://img54.imageshack.us/img54/9927/img1606smalldb5.jpg
See the difference
http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/5835/img1607smallro5.jpg
Now attach the rope to the new antenna the same way and pull the rope back through. Plug the new antenna in and screw it down.
Enjoy tunes!

ITR Shift Boot
Manchester Motorsports was out of OEM CTR boots so I just got an ITR one. The guy at the parts department said it would work and showed me how. These guys are great!
http://img47.imageshack.us/img47/1522/img1620smallih6.jpg
Just 2 screws to remove the boot
You can see they are slightly different sizes. The ITR is more narrow and the tabs don't bend. You can either bend the tabs or swap the frames for a perfect fit. I chose frames.
http://img47.imageshack.us/img47/6937/img1621smallac9.jpg
Simply flip it over and pull the material off the tabs
http://img47.imageshack.us/img47/796/img1623smallnh1.jpg
Attach the ITR boot to the DX frame and screw it back into the console

and as for my "do not race so I want my power to be more for the streets" comment which I realize now this sounds strange. I meant that I don't want to only feel pull at 6,000 rpm and higher. I will be just cruising around in this and not taking it to the track or trying to street race. I don't want my swap to feel like my Y7 unless I am at WOT. Make more sense?
I have never sourced an engine and was only going by prices I have seen online. I have a few names of places around CT that package up swaps and will be checking with them soon to see what pricing is like. $900 would be cheap and in that case I would be buying something better.
Last night was spend setting up my garage because I couldn't stand to even look at it. It is coming along. Tonight I should get some more work done and will post more pics.

I was going to just say that but then again some people get confused. So it turns out at $2k I have a lot more options than I thought http://www.car-part.com gave me some prices for local engines and I can afford much better than a B18B.
I can't decide if I want my spoon spoiler to be CF or painted. My mirrors, moldings and lips will all be painted so I might want to paint the spoiler also. I can't find any pics of painted one to see what I think. Anyone have a pic?

Nice pick up. Nice future mods too. I would go with a B-18C1 from an Integra GSR, CTR headlights instead of stock USDM chromes, and I would stick with the GT3's in 16", but I would go with red instead of silver rim w/polished lip. I dunno why, but red on silver looks absolute sex and I think the red GT3's would really bring that car to life.
Doesn't help that I'm partial. I have everything I meantioned on my EM1 besides the GT3's which are coming soon. ;)
And yes, model your car after that silver hatch above, except with GT3's in red. :)

So a little more work has been done.
After fixing the door seal and tailights with a new seal there are no leaks! My roomate and I pulled the car out of the garage and checked it over before reinstalling anything.

http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/4471/img1699smalloh5.jpg
Carpet Install
I bought the carpet from stockinteriors.com and I am happy with their product and service. I received email notifications and they had tracking links right from their site. I will buy from them again!
I have done this before and it takes patience.
-I am starting with a gutted car so this will take a lot more time if you need to remove your interior
-Start by laying the old carpet over the new one as pictured.
http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/1842/img1696smallxn3.jpg
-Make 2 cuts one for shift knob and one for ebrake. Make these straight and in the middle of the old openings. You will enlarge this openings later.
-Put the carpet into the car through the trunk and pull it towards the dash.
-Match up the carpet using the tunnel
-You can remove the rusty supports under the center of the dash or cut around them for now. I chose to cut around because these bolts were in tight. I did this by making a straight cut in the middle of the carpet and feeding the carpet forward while cutting until the ebrake and shifter could fit in their holes.
-Now form the carpet into place as much as possible. It will seam loose but that is normal.
-Start trimming the edges of the carpet. There will be extra on every edge. Keep referencing the old carpet to help. Remember to take little by little because you can always cut off more but you never can add more.
-Once the carpet edges are trimmed I move to the shifter and ebrake and cut the openings larger and larger until everything I need is exposed.
-Now move to the smaller holes. you will need to cut out for the seat bracket holes, seat belt detector wire and dead pedal.
-Next make sure the holes are visible for the tabs on the rear seat bottoms
-Now re-install the door sills to make sure all the clips can go in the holes without carpet in the way. You will have to make more cuts around the trunk and gas cap release levers as well as a hole for the seat belt.
-Re-install you center console and then seats

So I am picking up my moldings today but my headlights still haven't come in. ARG! I will be reinstalling the rest of the interior tonight as well as removing the old molding. I am also going to order mirrors, spoiler and some interior pieces while I am Manchester Motorsports.
So I will probably be purchasing those AME Circular GTAs because I have never seen anyone else rocking them and you can't beat a forged rim with tires for only $650! They should look something similar to this when on the car.

More Parts
So yesturday I ordered more parts from Manchester Motorsports. Thanks for the help Doug if you are checking this out!
- Spoon style paintable spoiler with led
- CTR front and rear lip
- a few interior pieces
- driver side rear window trim
- CTR grill
- hood release wire

Hood Release Cable
Interior put back together a bit. Starting the hood release cable install

Here is the broken cable end which snapped when someone pulled on jammed up cable
http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/3705/img1713xa4.jpg
-Start by removing the panel which is clearly missing in this picture and on the floor in the last picture. It is held on by 2 plastic pins which are very obvious
-Next unbolt this end of the cable
If you are looking at the latch you will see the cable comes from the driver side curls back around and enters the latch from the passenger side. This cable is held in place by a bunch of clips which you can see poking through the metal in this picture. There are also 2 clips in the fender well which can be reached by just taking off the fender liner. ( I HATE taking off fender liners) I tried to remove the cable from the latch without removing the latch from the car. It is much easier to just undo the 3 10mm bolts.

There are more things than this I am sure I am forgetting. I have yet to add in stuff like sand paper, cleaning supplies, spray paint, dremel bits....etc.
I am not counting tools in this number because they are not just for this project.
I don't like looking at that number but I don't have a ton left. But what I have left is expensive. Engine, mounts, axles, paint, racing seats, brakes, upholstery and a few others. My goal was to finish this for under $15 so I think I should be ok.

Comin along man. How much of a pain was the latch cable? I need to get around to replacing mine since the hadle broke off. I have had a new once for like a year just havent got around to it.
ct96ek
10-12-2007, 10:06 AM
It wasn't bad the only part that sucks is the 2 or 3 clips in the fender well. If you take the liner out it is easy but you don't have to. When I did it I was still driving the car so I didn't want to take it completely apart. I only undid a few clips and was able to pull it through. Just unbolt the latch to get the cable off, it makes things so much easier.
ImportFan1
10-12-2007, 11:19 AM
i have seen some people take off the fender to do this. how much of a pain is that to do?
ct96ek
10-12-2007, 11:33 AM
Unless your neck refuses to allow you to look up this is not necessary. If you try to take the fender off you could have all kinds of bad things happen. You could scratch it, mess up the alignment of the panels... whatever. It is not that undoing the bolts on fenders is difficult, its just an unnecessary step. In order to take off the fender you would need to take the liner off anyway. So why bother. Yes you can easily see and reach everything with the fender off. It probably takes 15 min to take the liner off if all the clips give you a hard time. Then another 15 to do the fender if you want.

I broke a bunch but didn't even try to be careful with them because most of my car is being replaced. Those clips always suck but you can get a ton of them at autozone for almost nothing

Hey ct, I have a question for you, what type of paint do you use to paint the raw metal under the seats and everything. I stripped my rear seats out and would like to paint all that nasty shit, after cleaning of course. So do you have any suggestions or anything.
BTW, awesome build, i have a silver 97 cx and love what your doing, wish I had the cash for a engine swap. lol, but SOHC ALL THE WAY

I just used some color matched generic stuff from autozone. I am reinstalling the full interior so I didn't really care how perfect this was. I just got rid of the rust and needed something to seal it.
I am going to go get come more pics because a lot has happened and I need to update.

It has been WAY too long since I have updated.
The holiday season hurt the wallet so spending on the car was put on hold. Good thing most of the work I needed to do is just labor and my time is free. So here it goes....
Just in case you didn't trust that these wheels were from Japan.
http://img128.imageshack.us/img128/4408/dsc00010lk2.jpg
The dash is out in order to tuck my fuse box into the glove compartment and I also needed tear apart my heating system. The previous owners must have parked it in the forest because the heater unit had about an inch of dirt, leaves and nuts in it.

Bumpers, lips, mirrors, spoiler, JDM moldings, grill, license surrounds and rocker panels sitting in the car ready to roll to paint.

Somehow a crazy amount of dirty got inside this bumper support. I don't really understand how. I blew it out with the compressor and the whole garage filled with dirt.
http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/1194/dsc00022qn6.jpg
I am not looking forward to dealing with all this wiring
http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/4045/dsc00023ap3.jpg
While cleaning out the heater unit I was moving the flaps in order to get all the dirt out. One of the flaps snapped in my hand AHHHH. I new unit from Honda is about $380 because it comes with a new heater core. So off to the salvage and $75 later I have another one with another heater core and wiring harness.

The D is just hanging around waiting for someone to buy it. Anyone interested? Make me an offer.
http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/9545/dsc00025ry9.jpg
I had to get a before shot of the suspension. Everything will be blasted and coated before I am done with it. But that will come after the paint.

I think I have my heart set on a mild H22 NA build. I found a local engine builder with a great rep who I want to use. I hate to go all this way and not do it right.
So I finally got my painter to look at the car and work up a quote for me. The price he gave me seems a little bit much. He said $2,750 cash - $600 for materials and the rest labor. He will be smothing out the seam sealer areas and welding patches for the rear wheel wells. What do you all thing? He does do AMAZING work.

After paint its going up on the jack stands to redo the suspension. Everything is coming off, getting blasted, coated with POR15 or Rust Bullet then reinstalled with new bushings and hardware where it is needed. Fastbrakes 11 inch Integra kit up front and some si discs out back all new of course. Stainless brake hoses, new hubs/bearings...etc. Then the wheels go to be refinished. Rear seats will go to upholstery to get matched to the racing seats I don't have yet. Then the interior back in with the fuse box in the glove box and the battery either infront of the front wheels or boxed in the trunk. Still can't decide if I can live with out a sub. Then finally on to the engine.

The Engine.....
I still need to learn the answers to some of my questions when it comes to my potential swap. After comparing my goals, the financial limits and what is available I think I have decided.
I am afraid of boost for many reasons some of which are stupid. Probably because this fall I went on a mountain run with my g35/350z club (fast driving through curving country roads up here in the northeast) I saw a VQ spit chucks of block and oil all over the road infront of me.
So I want to stay NA and not go crazy with high compression and an aggressive cam. SOOOO I am thinking I want to just go H22 and not care about all of the weight issues everyone wines about. I would have the engine torn down hot tanked and re-assembled with new rings, bearings and gaskets. Just do bolt-ons and call it a day.
The question I have are:
In order to pass inspection in CT (which for 96+ is just plugging in and checking for CEL type stuff) I need to stay ODB II. That would mean I need a 97+ H22 which is easy to find around here and pretty cheap. But will I have immobilizer problems?
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

I need some help/advice. Last night we dropped the suspension but 2 bolts are stuck. The left lca bolt on the body and a trailing arm bolt on the right side. My impact can't move them and I snapped a craftsman socket using my torque wrench. Any suggestions? I already pb blasted them. When I heated the lca bolt a little we just ended up screwing up the head a bit.

Looks great dude!
You might have to cut that bastage out with a sawzall (assuming you can squeeze the blade in there). You can also break the bolt in half or twist the end of it off if you use a strong enough socket and a breaker bar. I've broken them in half before when someone cross threaded a nut on the end.

I was frustrated last night and needed to stop trying. I will give it another go tonight and hopefully I will have some success. I can always cut the LCA bolt but the other one I can't. I have a complete new suspension going in the back so I am not worried about any other bolts. Here is what is going in for brakes / suspension:

New OEM Front Hubs

04-13-2008, 11:55 PM
ya I knew that was where it was but wasn't sure what it did seeing as it wasn't plugged into anything. I was just going to coil up the wires and keep it under the dash if I don't need it in the bay. Don't worry all the wire will get loom I was just getting started on the wires to see what I will need to extend. So far only the brake fluid level wires will need to be extended.
As for the headlights they are More SIR than CTR. I will have to put a pic up. Imagine the standard 96-98 USDM headlights but all clear instead of amber.

The rear end is all installed
- Completely new Si rear trailing arm assembly is in place with caliper and rotor
-blox lca installed
-skunk2 rear upper control arms in
-new undercoating on rear under support area (after hearing up the bolt it was all bubbled)
-coilovers in
Front end installed
-all honda oem pieces sandblasted, etching primered then finished in black
-new bearing and hub installed
-replaced lower ball joint
-blox upper control arms in
-coilovers in
-fastbrakes 11" caliper adapter in
-integra calipers on (had to be machined a little bit to allow clearance - which fastbrakes does not mention on their website)
-88-91 VW Corrado 11" front rotors on
We bolted up new wheels to see what it looked and check clearances.
Then we put it down on the ground and rolled it out of the garage to clean up underneath.
I thought I set the coilovers nice and high but the rear end is slammed and I am sure if an engine was in it then the front would be also. I LOVE the look. The wheels are unique and are a perfect color match.
Next items on the list
-possibly install a little sound deadening material
-reinstall interior
- mount fusebox in glovebox
-reloom wires
and most of all DECIDE ON AN ENGINE SETUP
The suspension is on and the car is rolling!! I just had it towed back to my apartment on Saturday in order to finish the rest of the assembly. Here are the pics I shot before the tow truck arrived.
Si rear installed - i will have a better pic when I install the brake hoses

You can see the fuse box wires coming out of the glove box in the above pictures. We have modified the box to fit in the glove box so now all I have to do it mount it and run the larger gauge wires. I still can't decide if I want to buy a relocate kit or just a small sealed battery. Next we will get the door panels and speakers installed. I need to fiberglass the door sails to accept my tweeters. The rest of the interior is not a problem and should be in quickly.

Life has been busy lately. My roommate moved out and my fiancee moved in on Saturday. I have been busy moving stuff around in the apartment. The wedding is a month away on July 26th so things have been busy with that as well.
Good news is I have a ton more room for tools and parts now that I am not sharing the garage with my roommate. I will be using some of the gift money from the wedding to buy the engine! I think I should make it my goal to have this done by September 9th as a birthday present to myself!!!
Rear bumper support is back from chemical dip and powder coat! It looks great! It came out so much better than I could have done with grinders and spray paint. You can see where the rust damaged the metal (it even went all the way through in a couple spots)

highneo, rdk, Chaos, RazzMaChazz, TECH N9NE, NYGraFFit1 - Thanks for all the props, it's always nice to know other people like what you are doing!
scrowley17 - The front lip was hard black plastic and it came from Manchester Motorsports. I think they buy all that stuff from Matrix Racing who is a distributor who probably just buys it from China like everyone else. I would not buy this front lip or grill again because the quality isn't top notch. I now I will be messing up the lip when I am so low so it will be replaced eventually. I have learned a lot since I started this build and I would do a few things differently now. The total cost of paint was $2,550. Which reminds me I need to update how much I have spent.
TECH N9NE - I currently do Marketing and Parts Development for TASAuto.com. We sell parts for 90-02 Accords and are a vendor here on Honda-Tech.
Jbuck2KCivic - Most likely I will be running a 97+ H22. I am doing to be buying one used locally in the beginning of August and then will have it rebuilt. Still not sure how crazy I want to go with internals.
Hopefully I can get something done this week so I can post an update.

Thanks for all the encouragement. I am trying to do things right and not overlook any details and it seams to be paying off.
I have some good news...I FOUND ONE! I found a 37820-P13-A12 ECU! This is the answer to my engine troubles. It is a 1996 OBD2A Prelude VTEC ECU. The only OBD2 Prelude ECU that does not have an immobilizer in it. They are very hard to find and can sell for up to $400. Now I can get my H22!

I need a some help / advice on a few things from everyone...
-Would I be better off buying an OBD2A H22 in order to make wiring easier. I know that there are plenty of OBD2B to OBD2A jumper harnesses out there, but would there be much more work than that? Both types of motors are available locally.
- Originally I was going to go with red racing seats in the front and fabric match my rear seats and door panels but now I am thinking red is a little to over-done. I might be leaning toward something a little different, maybe blue. I would love a set of DC5 blue Recaros but I would rather have something new. Bride makes some amazing blue seats but I am not in the mood to spend $1,500 a seat. Any ideas? I need to do something a little different.

Back to the real world! The wedding was amazing and our honeymoon in bermuda was fun. Lots of crazy modified cars in Bermuda but I swear I never saw a Honda. And most importantly...our wedding money is in the bank and the work begins again.

Things I haven't decided on: (and could use your input)
cat-back exhaust - I was going to do Apexi WS but now I kinda want a full stainless setup
cat - magnaflow, random etc.
racing seats - NRG red type R or something blue - I want them to be reclining
intake - short ram or whale penis

So I have a bunch of local H22A4s to choose from and can't decide. It might be easier to stay with a 97-98 because I can stay OBD2A and use most of my civic harness. Most of the 97-98s around here have 100,000 to 130,000 miles on them. Or I can get an engine with better miles in an OBD2B, get a new harness and buy a OBD2B to ODB2A jumper harness. I was planning on having the engine rebuilt but if I got a motor with under 60,000 miles on it I probably wouldn't. I want to try and pick up the engine tomorrow so I need to decide.

thanks lewisek! I don't think that "deadline" is a little to agressive. My wife is going away from Sept. 21st to August 3rd for job training so that will be my crunch time. ct96ek
08-28-2008, 10:12 AM
Ya I get some decent discounts because we are hooked into so many suppliers, but by no means do I get any crazy good deals. I am waiting on a TON of Honda parts as well as some things from autometer and my radiator setup. Last night the block was taped off for paint and received a lot more dremel action.
I still can't decide on seats. My options:
Integra front seats and stock rear seats with custom upholstery (something different)
Racing seats with custom matched rears
NRG Type R seats in black or red - I am afraid might be to small because I can't find dimensions
Corbeau - A4 wide
Corbeau - CR1 wide
Corbeau - TRS wide

I'm liking the NRG Type R, or the CR1 wide.

Last night I picked up some Aircraft Stripper as well so some gloss black and clear to redo the valve cover. Originally I was going to have some fun with the valve cover but I think i will just keep it clean and simple like everything else.
Update on the seats - I am leaning heavily towards some black Corbeau TRS seats (http://www.corbeau.com/products/reclining_seats/trs/) I am going to wheel out the car and put in Integra seats in it to see how black seats look with the gray interior.

So here is what I still need to figure out:
EGR: Without the EGR solenoid and wiring I will not be able to run the EGR. So until I figure that out I am just going to cap the vacuum port so that the EGR stays closed.
Wiring: I need a ECU pin out diagram for a 1996 VTEC Prelude P13-A12 ECU in order to know where to add the wires to my civic harness
I might end up with some vacuum and fuel line troubles but I will figure them out
