Ok, so the hatch is now gone. It was fun, but now on to something a little more..challenging.

I found this gem locally on craigslist. After an initial upchoke-ing at first glance, the car grew on me. I did some research, I called the guy for a test drive, fell hard for it, and then bought it.

Here's the pics:

It still has the ORIGINAL DEALER'S BADGE from the where the first owner purchased the car new (waaaayyyy back in 1988!)!!! I confirmed this with the carfax report.

Plans for Summer '08

1. Strip out interior for a complete refresh:
- Spray Dye the darker brown part of dash a little bit lighter of a brown. (Fix a crack in the dash while I'm at it)
- Spray Dye the headliner and pillars a light cream/ivory hue
- Give the rest of the dash/panels a good thorough cleaning and armor-all-ing
- Steam clean the hell out of the seats; stitch and patch a few rips and holes (or find replacements)
- Steam clean the hell out of the carpet
- Nardi Wood grain steering wheel and shift knob.
- Mugen pedal set
- Find a Coin Box for the console (it is missing! :( )
- As close to OEM looking tan floor mats as I can find.
- Vacuum out all dirt, mold, rat-poop, or whatever else is making that funky smell from all
the nooks and crannies in the shell.
- Spray the interior/shell with cream white to match exterior.
- Put all carpet, panels, and seats back in and get it looking tidy.

2. Exterior restoration

- Sand and prep body; fix all dents, remove and rid of any rust
- Remove rear wiper and shave hole
- Pain a light cream or ivory hue. Not a pure-white job. Jams painted. Wait on engine bay(for now!)
- Trim on doors and center lines of front/rear bumpers painted satin-black, as well
as air dam strips in the center of bumper
- Fresh satin coat for roof-rack and all exterior trim, mirrors, wiper arms, etc...
- Red pinstripe all-around in center of black bumper/side trim
- Custom fab. some sort of front lip from another older model Honda/Acura's lip ('86 Integra???)
- Custom decal shop reprints "RT-AWD" logos (or, find a set new from Honda???)
- Polish all OEM badging
- Find a "H" emblem for the front hood.
- Restore headlight, tail light, and bumper lenses
- Paint inside of headlight lenses gunmetal, VHT tint spray part of corner lenses to match the look
of JDM shuttle headlights. Any advice appreciated here.
- Find small circle-shaped Shuttle side-markers on Ebay or something similar in appearance.
- HID kit; Low Beam=Xenon and High Beam=Halogen (to pass inspection yearly)
4300K. More low key color, more classy looking to match theme of car.
- Replace rear-drivers side tail light (has a tiny chip)
- Replace rear-hatch support arms (their dead as a door nail)
- degrease and clean all of under-chassis; spray with "Chassis Black" spray

3. Engine/Mechanical:

- Replace any worn parts, hoses, belts, etc...
- Oil change, change all fluids
- Check up on transmission, service as needed
- new plugs, wires, cap, button
- Clean the bay like crazy. Make it look as good as that little D15 can look!
- Spray valve cover with a crackle black paint.
- Find out a way to safely and reliably drop this thing about 3 to 4 inches
Unfortunately, I'll PROBABLY have to ditch the cool mud flaps. They will hang too low, I believe.
- Custom Exhaust, don't believe I'll find one that bolts up.
- Cross-drilled rotors; paint calipers and rear drums with Duplicolor silver paint kit
- New brake pads. Bleed lines, new fluid.

4. If I have the money: Set of Mugen MR5's on some hot and sticky tires. I'll wait for a good set. It REALLY needs them, and the drop, of
course!

5. Go BIG PIMPIN' around town.

So, for this summer, basically, make it look as fresh as possible. Then, start the LONG quest of making more power. We'll see how this will turn out. Thanks for looking!

Baby soon on the way!!! My wife just hit her due-date today! SOOO excited. I'll post pics of little Ellie, once she enters the world.

That being said, it will probably be around mid-June when I begin working like CRAZY on this. It will be a fast build, once I start. So, please check back often this summer. Thanks for looking!:D

I've fallen for these cars as well. I like the 88-91 body style better though. One day I'd like to completely gut it down and remove all rust, repaint it, nice motor the list goes on. First Wagovan build I've seen on this site, it's going to be a good one.

More pics,
I'm probably just going to gank this "cool vanilla" color of the new Chrysler Aspen's. I valet'd one of these last weekend. It's exactly the hue I've been looking forward. Staight-forward cream, with no pearls. Let me know what you think...

Dang it! Just go to chrysler.com, go to the aspen, select "cool vanilla" for now. ImageShack still sucking!!

I agree. This is a very "off-white" cream. Not stark, "jdm-championship" white.

I'll do an artistic rendering/illustration soon to show my full idea for the exterior.

Why not throw a nice turbo on the D15? Or rebuild the D15?

It's a good project. I just think instead of Mugen rims right now, get this thing looking and moving fast.

Interesting idea. The car is at the shop right now preparing for some repairs. The main guy at the shop suggested this route as well, actually swapping for all 92-95 Civic EFI parts. I was thinking more along the lines of B18 Turbo, pushing as much power out of a CRV drivetrain as possible. I just don't know a lot about how this is all going to work. I need to subscribe to redpepperracng, or hondacivicwagon.com. I'm sure they can answer a lot of questions for me.

For this summer, I will rebuild the D15 as needed. It will stay carburated, and low powered. That is fine for me right now. When I do the "go fast" thing, it will be done right, or not at all. Stage 1: bringing back the look and feel of a classic. Stage 2: make it a classic SLEEPER. nt time. We'll see.

There is a slight possibility I may pull out the engine this summer to paint the bay, and really clean the engine, replace all hoses, and work inside it a bit to get it perfect again. We will see.

^ i think he said it was in another thread - like the with that weird low gear correct me if im wrong

yes, it is a 6 speed. It has a "super low gear" for snow/ice or pulling. Then, it has your normal other 5 gears, going 1 through 5, plus reverse. So, it's called a "6-speed".

Keep it awd, keep it dseries, get a zc and turbo that bich!

The crv drivetrain only puts 10% at most the the rear wheels so it would be ompleatly pointless to swap it to a bseries for a crv drivetrain as its the crap of crap for anything awd. With the wagovan its All time AWD!

I hear you man. Thanks for the advice! You mentioned to keep it D series, but get a ZC. Im confused. Isn't the ZC another series from the D motors. Or, is it a D series bottom end with a ZC head? Would it be a direct blot on with the ZC, and if not, are aftermarket engine mount kits available for the Wago? What car does the ZC originally come out of? Are there more than one engine in the ZC family, and if so, which is the most potent for the buck?

How much power AND reliability could I get out of the ZC turbo set-up? What about the stock axles; would they be strong enough to take that much power, or would they need to be upgraded? Are there aftermarket units available for this set-up?

Also, thanks for clarrifying about the CRV drivetrain. That makes since. But, Isn't the Wagovan Real Time AWD, which is not full time? I heard that there is a way to mod it to be all time-awd though. Let me know on this as well.

I don't know much about the older motors, so if anyone could throw some knowledge at me, that would be great. Basically, I'm out of my "comfort zone" with this build.

http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/9532/dsc01688yx8.th.jpg (http://img256.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01688yx8.jpg)

(7) All of trim piece on the hatch decided to peel off. It just needs to be prepped and painted. No biggy...

http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/5056/dsc01690bd6.th.jpg (http://img296.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01690bd6.jpg)

And...

(8) The biggest UGLY. This rear window trim piece got cracked off. I'm really worried about finding a replacement. I'm probably going to have to call every "Pull-a-Part" in the nation! I will get on this soon.

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/3525/dsc01667mp5.th.jpg (http://img204.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01667mp5.jpg)

Other uglies not pictured:

(9) a hairline crack at the top of the dashboard

(10) A few rips in the drivers seat. May need new seat. Pull-a-part?!

(11) Carpet is ONLY worn out under the pedals. Other than that, I think it can be steam cleaned and reused. I'll look for a nice set of carpet mats, and it should cover up this portion of ugly-ness.

(12) Coin box on the dash and the rear/hatch dome light are no where to be found. Pull-a-part?!

(13) I'm sure there are more, which I will soon discover.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks for the info., I'm currently researching this. How much power could I get out of this NA? Are superchargers available for the d16a1? I ask this because it would be cool to autocross the wagon. I am sure that it would be no prob. to turbo, but just thought I'd get all of my options together on this one.

I agree Alex, and I would rather go that route, even if it meant a little less power.

Then again though, it would be pretty sweet to turbo charge it, and make it a drag sleeper on the streets. I would personally beat my car unrecognizable with a sledge hammer if it got beat by a '87 Wagovan!

Yeah, I know. I've been looking all over for some clean 84-87 wagon builds. There really is none out there on all of the internets. There was a guy who had a wagon themed "Wagon Attack" who turbo'd a 87 Wag, I believe, a red one. It's pretty sweet. However, he focused mainly on performance, and almost seemed to present the whole thing as kind of an ironic joke. At the time of his build, this made sense, as everyone in the "scene" was building 90+ model cars a few years ago. Now, people are starting to look more towards retro builds, and are starting to take the older chassis's more seriously, as restorations, etc...

I'm going to take this build VERY seriously, and try to make every aspect of this car, both mechanically and aesthetically, as fresh as possible. I'm just running into a wall with the research side of things. I'm awaiting the webmasters at hondacivicwagon.com to respond and approve my registartion there. I'm sure they can give me some great answers once I get onboard. I need to do the same at redpepperracing.com. These two memberships should help me get the ball rolling, especially with the performance side of things. Questions like:

How do you lower the 84-87 wags, and what about fabbing a performance exhaust?

Well see...

Suspension and all that for 84-87 Wagons is different from EF chassis from what I know. There's a way to do it, but it's a lot harder than on a 88-91 Wagon as they have same suspension as EF's. Definitely look into this aspect before moving on with the build.

Looks like I'm going to pick and pull Saturday, you want me to get those parts for you?

Thanks to the help of grandparents and family, we have settled in quickly with Eleanor, and things are starting to feel more comfortable.

I asked Leanna if I could go ahead and start working on the Wago, and she was very cool about it.

So, off we go with Stage 1: Getting the Wagovan and it's little D15 in top mechanical condition again.

I will be needing this engine for a little while, so we need to get the car right. A little trip to Advanced, and we are ready to get this engine back in shape. I bought...pretty much everything.

New Stuff:

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/8041/dsc01809dz6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I'm going to try to get a lot of tune-up work done this afternoon, weather and time providing. Ellie comes first now, so we will see.

The plan is to get all installed today and tomorrow, and then clean the engine on Tuesday, with:
(1) New crinkle black paint on the valve cover,
(2) Semi-black paint on the air filter and timing belt housings, and
(3) Fresh grey paint for the block and exhaust manifold cover.

* I also bought a new grounding cable/wire for the valve cover, stainless steel braided.
* Password JDM owes me a $20 credit for sending me a "less than perfect" carbon/kevlar spark plug
cover for the EK. I'm going to use that credit towards a JDM Type R oil cap. The above things should
really freshen up the bay, without looking to fancy.

So, for reference sake, here's a before pic of the bay:

I'll post pics around mid-week of the rest of the process.

Small update:

Just got in from changing out the spark plugs, cap, button, and air filter. The air filter was a mess. The battery terminals also got a good Pepsi and brush scrubbing.

The spark plugs: Wow. Thats all I have got to say. Two out of the four looked like they had not been changed since the vehicle left the lot back in '87. I'll post pics later. This concerns me. it's a miracle the engine is still running!

Even after just this little amount of maintenance the engine behaved A LOT better! I'm still having fuel delivery problems. I suspect its a bad fuel pump. I'm going to change out the primary and secondary fuel filters first, and then see what I've got.

Can someone comment on the piece that SHOULD be coming off to the left of my air filter box. Whats the name of this piece? I know it routes to the left of the battery. Also, how important is it? (I know it's important, or Honda would not have put it on the engine. But, is it safe to run this car without it?)

All right, well, update:

Delays! When I bought this car, I didn't know that this engine was in as bad of a shape as it is.

Working on this car reminds me of that gopher and mallet game from the arcade when we were kids. As soon as I knock down one problem, another problem pops up!

I fixed the primary and secondary fuel filters, replaced the fuel pump, plugged in some loose electrical connectors, replaced the radiator hoses and added new coolant. That got it running a lot more smoothly, though their is still some fuel problems at idle. I think it's the O2 sensors, which I will replace soon.

So, I got all of that replaced. Then, the car wouldn't turn over! Turns out that the battery was totally drained. I had the battery tested, and it came up as being good, and not needing replacement. So that tells me it's probably one of two things: (1) more than likely, its the alternator; or (2) a bad starter, or both. I have ALWAYS had bad luck with these two items on any car that I own. I'm probably just going to replace both of them for peace of mind, along with the O2 sensors, and call it a day.

Either way, I'd rather be cleaning the bay and the interior right now. I've also dropped about $250 in engine parts for an engine I really don't like anyway. Man, theirs like 250 vacuum hoses on this bad boy! I'm sure several are all rotted up, though I'll NEVER find them! Anyway, as soon as I get the engine mended up, and running well consistently, I'll move onwards. Hopefully I'll get started on interior restoration and have some pics soon. I'll keep you updated as I make progress.

Ok, Update:

I was watching the baby tonight so that my wife could get some sleep. I decided to do a little artistic rendering of the exterior of the Wagovan. I wanted to make sure that what I had in my head (visually) was going to work, before I started on the bulk of the work. So, this is what I have come up with...

Before:

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/967/dsc01655rl0.th.jpg (http://img299.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01655rl0.jpg)

and

After:

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/2306/dsc01861uu3.th.jpg (http://img299.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01861uu3.jpg)

After putting it down on paper, I still feel pretty comfortable about my vision for this build. Let me know what you guys think. I tried to use the water-color pencils to get the exterior color as close to that Chrysler "Cool Vanilla" as I could. But, this should give you a general idea of how I hope this thing will look.

I am currently in the process of trying to secure some 84-85 JDM Shuttle black-housing, recessed headlights, tinted corners, as well as side markers, from a guy in the Netherlands. He has some rain-guards for the windows as well. I tried to illustrate all of these things in the drawing.

I also picked up the following:

a MINT condition '87 Civic Wagon manual. It was a closeout item from a Honda dealership on Ebay.

http://img383.imageshack.us/img383/7101/dsc01878zd9.th.jpg (http://img383.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01878zd9.jpg)

http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/7350/dsc01880cs3.th.jpg (http://img214.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01880cs3.jpg)

...and a neat little 80's magazine add clipping that a guy was selling on Ebay.

http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/6743/dsc01879yr7.th.jpg (http://img214.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01879yr7.jpg)

Mechanical Update: Advanced Auto slow charge tested the battery, and it tested good. I'm going to go ahead and change out the Alternator and Starter, a couple of fuel lines in the bay, change the oil, run SeaFoam (thanks for the tip Alex!), and change out the brake shoes in the rear on Sunday or Monday.

I hope that this will take care of the majority of the mechanical issues. Then I'll finish cleaning up the bay, and begin interior restoration pronto.

I hope that everyone is doing well. I'll keep posting progress and photos soon. Thanks for looking!

Sorry I have not updated in a while, but progress HAS been made. I made a request to our local Pull-a-part for a brown Civic wagon, and they actually got me one!

So, I quickly ran down there, and snagged the following parts, as mine were either missing, or imperfect in some sort of way:

-That plastic trim piece on the drivers side rear window! YES!!!!!!
-The side molding piece for the passenger front door
- The coin holder from the dash
- The cigarette lighter
- The intake tube for the engine bay
- A fuse box cover for the engine bay
- Rear hatch dome light/unit
- New interior floor plastic pieces for front seats, as both of mine were cracked
- Hatch support shocks (mine were blown)
- 3 out of 4 of the original Honda mats
- The OEM rear speaker panels and OEM honda speakers; I didn't have these at all, I thought my car didn't come with rear speakers, so I'm very excited about this!
- A fresher "H" emblem for the rear hatch
- and a few other misc. items, I'm sure I'm forgetting something

...and the best part, all for $27 and about two hours worth of elbow grease! Pull-a-part FTW!!

Yeah, me happy! Now, all I need is a header panel, and I'll be good to go. Everything else is fresh.

Also, the engine is almost done mechanically, just need to finish up a couple more things, and then I'll start painting and detailing things. Maybe two more weeks on this, then I'll start on the interior, which, now, should come out bomb-diggidy. Hopefully.

Hey. Sorry I've been off of the map for a while. I'm back with an update:

ENGINE:

- Running smoother now! I Sea-Foamed the intake, crankcase, and fuel tank. This helped out tremendously, and I can tell that it is continuing to help the more I drive the car.

- New radiator on the way, which should stop the cooling issue. All pray for the water pump, please.

- Once the radiator arrives, I'll install it, then detail the engine.

EXTERIOR:

Obtained cleaner items of: all trim molding, passenger tail light, driver headlight & trim, set of
badging front and rear, new corner light, pas. bumper lens, front plastic grille

Painted wiper arms and rear trim piece on hatch; painted wheel-wells black

RT-4WD logos removed (work in progress!)

Me and a couple of guys from redpepperracing.com are working on creating duplicate
decals. I'll add a fresh set on later, hopefully.

Removed roof rack (I thought I was going to keep it. I removed it to clean it, and found that
I like the wagon better without the rack on top. What do you guys think?)

Applied Forever Black to the side moldings.

Washed and Xymol'd the heck out of the exterior.

I am working backwards than previously planned, doing the exterior work first. Paint will not come this summer. With the new baby and new responsibilities, I just don't have the time.

However, I am trying to refresh what I have as much as possible.

So, the exterior is pretty much done for now. I just need to apply forever black to the front/rear bumpers, do some touch-up paint work on some places, and continue to get sticky residue form the RT-4WD logos and that Texas logo off of the hatch. They had been on there for 20 years, it's just going to take a little while for it to get off of there, and a lot of patience on my part!

Here's the pics:

http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/5585/dsc02108dh8.th.jpg (http://img180.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc02108dh8.jpg)

Also, I saw a few pics of wagons with basket-weave/mesh wheels. I really liked the look, and went out to try and find some. Low and behold, I found a set of 15x7 BBS wheels at a local Honda salvage yard. I got them for a sweet deal, and couldn't pass these up.

Pics:

http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/4073/dsc02099xe0.th.jpg (http://img502.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc02099xe0.jpg)

http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/6854/dsc02100ia5.th.jpg (http://img502.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc02100ia5.jpg)

I'm going to paint the mesh gloss black, and then polish the heck out of the lips.

BBS center-caps were missing in action, unfortunately. However, while I was there, I picked up these mint condition center caps from another Honda wheel. i'll cut the tabs off the back of them, glue them, and they should line up rather nicely.

I still have plans to paint the exterior cream and drop some Mugen MR-5's on this bad-boy. However, they will have to come in time. These rims will be great for me right now. Plus, they were dirt cheap. I just have to get some tires. It will be nice to nearly double the thickness of my current tire set-up!

INTERIOR:

Sourced every worn down/missing part, and a better rear carpet section. Search complete, except for the front drivers seat, which I have a cool plan on how to fix.

Trying to put together the best audio set-up that Honda had available for this wagon at the time it was built.
I got REALLY lucky and found some rear-speakers and panels for my color interior at pull-a-part. Now, I'm trying to secure an audio EQ and cassette-holder console to sit under the dash with an OEM equalizer to match.

Steering wheel hub for the Nardi wheel and an OEM clock are also on the way.

I have some Formula 303 Aerospace Protectant and Fabric/Vinyl cleaner on order from my favorite online detail store (www.properautocare.com; check them out!, super cool people), and it should be here today or tomorrow. So, once that arrives, I'll start gutting, vacuming, cleaning, stitching seats rips, etc..., then I'll put everything back in with a fresh set of floor mats.

Should be done with the interior very soon.

That's all for now. I'll keep everyone informed.

Let me know what you think about the rims!

Anyone have any ideas on how to get the rest of the RT-4WD sticker residue off of the car?

I have been using A LOT of goo-gone. How about rubbing compound?

I hear you. Glad to here another opinion.

So, does everyone else agree; Should i keep them silver, or go ahead and paint just the interior mesh gloss black, while leaving the outer rim polished aluminum?

I was thinking that the black in the rim would match the black trim that will go around the car once it is painted.

EastCoastEK

...With painting them black, I was a bit worried about the paint fading.

Anyone else tried to paint their rims, and had success/problems with the paint due to brake dust, wheel cleaners, etc...

Let me know the best way to go about doing this and having the paint last and not fade/chip a bunch, and the upkeep of the wheel once you paint it (i.e.: cleaning it and keeping it looking good).

If this is hard, than I will definitely not paint them. It's not worth the headache.

ha! yeah, that would be pretty sweet. I'm just trying to retain a stock look to the interior (minus the nardi stuff!). Plus, if I ever wanted to autocross the car, I would want to stay competitive. A cage would bump me up a class from stock, and I'm not ready for all that, not with this engine!

Almost had the "new" OEM radio and Equalizer in today, but had to go off to work before I could finish tidying up everything. Hoping to finish early tomorrow morning.

Dude, that EQ is INCREDIBLE, even today. Not to mention it was installed in the cars of the 80's. A true testament to Honda's innovation. I'll try to get a video posted of the little LED audio signal bars in action. SO COOL!!!!

Sorry, don't wont to post pics of completed interior restore until it is up to my standards. This will happen soon. HOPEFULLY by Sunday evening.

Hey,

Sorry for the delay in pics. I've jumped in to body work here at the last minute this summer. We start teacher workdays next week. So, I'll get the exterior done and post pics inside and out soon.

New exterior plan. No cream paint (for now). Going to try this for now:

Paint front and rear bumpers to match body, except for the trim line that matches the side moldings. Moldings and bumper trim-lines will be painted satin black.

I've order 3/4" Fire Red pinstriping to go alont the middle of the moldings and bumpers.

I'm prepping and re-painting the rear doors, only from the trim molding downwards. I just couldn't get off that sticky residure from the "RT-4WD" logos. Plus, I scuffed the paint up pretty good in the process.

Same goes for the Rear hatch, thanks to that stupid Texas metal decal. 20 years of Bill McDavids Honda really ate through that paint! So, hatch gets new paint.

Lastly, I'm painting the front left fender, and the header panel. The rest of the paint is just fine.

When finished, it should look just like my illustration, except all brown and black, not cream and black.

Hopefully I can get the paint to match up well. Either way, it will look a lot better than it does now.

I was just going to spot paint the car, as I posted a few days ago. However, I quickly realized how expensive paint is nowadays! Plus, I would have not been able to match the panels to the color of the rest of the car very well. The sensible option, especially for my current budget, was to take it down to Maaco and have the whole exterior repainted.

Maaco had a special on their "Supreme" paint service. It's a single stage Dupont Urethane paint, with integrated clear. It's usually 600. They were offering it for 400, and I was able to talk them down to 320, WITH the color change, which is usually an additional 50 bucks. They were VERY COOL about working with me. They said they were pretty happy with the prep work I did, so well see what difference it will make on the final product.

Since I have the oppurtunity to START on my color change for this car, thats what I'm doing. The exterior will be painted along with my original plan: Chrysler Cool Vanilla; with black moldings/accents, and a red pinstripe all the way around.

I will paint the jams at the same time as my engine swap, which may even be as soon as this Fall. It looks as if this car will become my daily. We are planning to sell our '97 Accord to pay off all of our debt. We will also use about a grand off the profit from the sale to swap a DOHC D16a1 into the wagon, and totally fix all mechanical problems (if possible!) Then, I'll drive the wagon, and wife and baby will ride in the '03 Xterra. We don't need 3 cars right now, and I like the wagon much more than I do the Accord. The wagon has...originality and character. While nice cars, everybody and there momma drives a 94-97 Accord!

I did a lot of research as to why Maaco jobs were a success for some, and a failure for others. I tried to prep the car in the same ways as those who found success with Maaco jobs. My process is below.

I basically sanded down all my high spots, filled and sanded and primed all of my low spots/dents/dings/scratches, filled and fixed the deep dents in my header panel and front passenger fender, and the lower part of the rear door panels . All trouble spots got 60-100-150-220 grit sanding, then primer.

I then sanded the whole car from 400 to 800 grit.

The rear doors took ALOT of work. The "RT-AWD" logos had burned DEEP into the paint. It was more effective to just fill over the whole panel on both sides and then smooth them down. However, it took A LONG TIME.

This was my first experience with body work, bondo, primer, etc... So, its not perfect, but I learned a lot. This is what matters most to me. I put about 12 hours into the prep total. I feel that I could do the same amount of work again in about 8 hours, which I'm happy about.

I took off as many of the panels/molding as I could. I also removed all of the lights (tail lights and roof antenna mount removed when I got there).

I taped all the areas I didn't want painted, as seen in the pictures.

I will be painting all of the accessory pieces, as well as the bumper trim, myself. The bumper trim, moldings, mud flaps, front air dam, lower part of front bumper, and all other black plastic pieces will be painted with this SEM satin-black bumper paint featured below. My front and rear bumpers, as well as the mirrors were given treatment with the pictured high-grade Dupont Adhesive Promoter prior to taking it down to the body shop. I'll treat all the other black rubber and plastic pieces with this stuff prior to paint as well.

My 3/4" red pin-striping should arrive tomorrow at the local paint supply store. This will be going 360-degrees around the car at the middle of the trim molding. It was hella-expensive, since it only came in a 150-ft role :x However, I feel that it is worth it, and I know that the pinstripe is what is going to set the car off and give it the old-gansta vibe I'm going for.

http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/1623/dsc02407xu0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/1623/dsc02407xu0.c4c18c8228.jpg (http://g.imageshack.us/g.php?h=512&i=dsc02407xu0.jpg)

Lastly, after much careful thought, I opted to have them paint the mirrors as well. The base of the mirror will be left OEM black rubber, while the body of the mirror will get the Cool Vanilla treatment with the rest of the car.

Close-Up pic to give you the idea:

Once again, here's color choice. The shade is called "Cool Vanilla", and its from the current Chrysler line.

http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/6361/coolvanillawa3.th.png (http://img101.imageshack.us/my.php?image=coolvanillawa3.png)

I hope it will all come out hot. I'll post pics when the car comes back from Maaco early next week, and then I'll post more pics as I get the molding/trim pieces and the pinstripes on.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks man! I hope to get those on within a couple of weeks.

This thing is going to need a drop to make them look good.

This is presenting a prob., as apparently the 4WD wagons are much trickier to lower.

Unlike their 2WD counterparts, their rear suspension is set up totally different from the other
3rd gen civics. Thus, finding after-market support is TOUGH!

Sorry for the delay in pics! Car actually came back yesterday.
I've just been so busy with teacher work-days, and baby-Eleanor.

I'm very happy with the outcome. My body work was decent.
I still have a LOT to learn though.

Everything will be back on the car soon, with the hood latch properly aligned as well.
I've had some problems reassembling the latch after I installed the radiator last weekend.
I'll get it fixed, just haven't had the time.

I'll post more pics once all the black pieces get paint, and are back on the car.
The trim molding in the center of the bumpers will get paint too.
What your seeing is kind of the "rough draft". There is still painter's tape on some parts of the car.

Maaco in Matthews, NC gets my stamp of approval. For $320, and 5 days turnaround time, they can't be beat.

Try them out!

Rims will look great...two questions though...I thought it was being painted white...looks like a cream color to me from the pics...and why did you not get them to fill in the front license plate mounts...

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I'm glad to hear that everyone seems to like what is going on.

I didn't fill the front bumper holes because I hope to find an old school Civic license plate
to put there, or just make my own.

Working on the drop and getting tires for the rims.

Fogs on the way, will post pics once installed.

I still owe you interior pics, just haven't had time to install the Nardi stuff, though my hub IS finally here.

D16a1 swap coming very soon. The sooner the better, as this will soon become my daily.

Updates...

Sorry for the lack of updates lately.

School started on Tuesday, and starting the new school year off took a lot out of me. I'm teaching K-4 art, for all that are interested. I'm also the band assistant to the upper and middle school, and will be coaching upper school boys basketball this coming winter.

Also, we just had to move out of the apartment and into a new house closer to my school this past week. It was treated poorly by the last tenants, and needed A LOT of work prior to us moving in. We are STILL killing ourselves on getting settled in, and getting everything clean and livable. Its a really nice place though, now that we have brought it back to life, and its a huge step up for us from the apartment. NOW I HAVE MY OWN BACKYARD TO WORK ON AND WASH THE WAGON!

As far as the wago, its sitting outside, just waiting for me to complete the interior.

I did get some more crucial parts though. I meet up with a RPR member this past saturday, and he brought me a cargo cover for the wagon! Also, I picked up a set of Kenwood speakers for my rear pods from him as well. They are practically brand new. The cargo cover's for my 5-door are very hard to come by, especially in such good condition. It is for a blue interior, so I will be spraying it with tan fabric spray. It should come out great though.

Oh, and the fogs came in! Good news: Their are NIB, as described. Bad news: They don't come with the mounting brackets and interior switch. Apparently each model had a kit that you had to buy sperately to accompany the one generic OEM fog set.

So, let me know if you hear of any fog light accesory kits for a fog kit sold about 22 years ago.:roll:

Come hell or high water, I WILL find that stupid kit!...I hope :(

ehh, dont know yet....having electrical troubles, alternator still not charging the battery. can't drive at night, 'cause the lights drain the system too much!

when I do the motor swap next month, I hope the new wiring harness will fix this.

I prob. have a bad wire or fuse somewhere.

Updates:

(1) JDM Shuttle 3-piece lip and sidemarkers are on their way from New Zealand.

(2) Same source is working on the Fog Light dilemma for me, as well as the following:

- Kioto Black Housing Shuttle Headlights and JDM Smoked Corner Lights
- JDM Gauge Cluster
- JDM OEM plastic rain guards (he is having a time finding some!)
- JDM Shuttle Center Console

But, the BIG news is the following:

D16a1 DOHC swap WILL happen, and I am now in the process!

I'm building it now for boost later. Hopefully, Jackson Racing Superchager, in a year or so.

Why D16a1 and not a B or H motor?

1. I can use my existing drivetrain, and keep RT-4WD. Might have to have custom driveshaft made later, for strength. But still!
2. Old school nostalgia. More appropriate to the age of my car.
3. It pretty much bolts right up, no chassis/mount mods are needed.

I have started a thread just for my swap at RPR.com, for those that are interested, or want to follow along and maybe catch knowledge for some of ol' skool experts!

This is such an exciting thread, subscribed! Congrats on your daughter to man yer keep this up, can't wait for the drop...

Cool! Thanks, glad to see so much interest. I'm trying to do this thing right! Also, thanks for the congrats on my daughter. Life is awesome with her in it!

I just got the electrical problem figured out, which was HUGE.

I'm now driving the wagon daily.

Turns out I had a wiring issue going to the alternator, just as I suspected. It wasn't allowing the alternator
to charge the battery. Once that was solved, the last issue worked itself out...

...which was the battery. It had a jacked-up cell. So, I got a new one of those too.

Now, no electrial problems.

Got my rear speakers installed. I'm jammin. It sounds great. Need to open up my EQ and fix
a wiring issue, as it likes to fail frequently. Old radio stuff, figures. When its working, the sound is BALLA'! I love classical music, and it just sings on this system (I'm a music major, don't hate! :) )

Still need to put on the Nardi stuff, and stitch some rips in the front seat. I have a ...."creative" plan as to how to accomplish this.

I've ordered, and am going to pick up OEM Honda carb rebuild parts this weekend, and hopefully I'll get started on that ASAP. Once its running, I'll be doing a complete carb devac, per help from rpr.com folks. This should clean up the bay quite a bit, and let the car run more freely.

Once all is running well, I'll life the engine out, clean and paint the bay, change the water pump and timing belt, add a new starter and full size radiator, replace both of the axels, and the engine and bay should be done.

Next, paint all the jams, then lower the car, rims/tires, and custom exhaust, then... done (for now).

This will all take place fairly soon. I'll keep you all posted, as always.

Thanks for looking,
Peace,
DT

Hey, I have a 4WD wag, NOT the 2WD which shares it's suspension components with many other 3rd gen civics/1st crx's. This has been my main problem with the drop.

As I understand it, the front suspension is just like any other 3rd gen civic, but the REAR: It's totally different/unique from all the other civics. Unfortunately, as far as I know, there is nothing aftermarket made for my rear. I have not heard of the Tein kit, or using the Integra torsion bars in the rear.

Are you SURE that these would work for my 4WD suspension? If so, I'll definitely check them out.

Otherwise, it looks as if I'm going to have to look into some custom work. Otherwise, I can just play around with my stock torsion bars, and maybe drop about half an inch, but thats just not enough for me.

I could cut the springs, but that's just ghetto. Maybe it would be so bad, so long as I didn't cut off that much...

Someone else mentioned getting a shock of equal length, but softer spring rate, that way it would still use the stock shocks, but just sit lower. Anyone know a company/business that could do this for me?

Ok, BIG update!:

Swap just might happen after all...

I found a D16a1, black top, for $100!!!!

Going to go pick it up on Sunday morning.

Has no exhaust or intake manifolds, maybe no dizzy, and no throttle body...and no engine harness. Still, I feel it's a killer deal.

Also, unfortunately, the BBS rims don't fit. Took them down to Discount Tire today for a test fit, and they are about an inch too wide for my taste, plus their
is a big dent in one of the rims that they said is going to cost a good bit of money to fix.

So, i'm returning them, and will be going with my original plan (if possible): Mugen MR5's. Hopefully with some Direzza Z1 star specs.

Pics of the engine soon to come, if this really goes down. fingers crossed!

Ok, so update:

Found another engine. The two will soon combine into one.

This next engine has all of my accessories: Dizzy, Alternator, Starter, both Manifolds, injectors, cam gear cover...blah, blah, blah. Basically, everything that I don't already have. However, the timing belt was thrown off of it, so it more than likely has some valve prob.'s, and the head may be shot. But that's OK, that's not what I'm getting it for. However, there is a chance I'll end up with (2) good motors, which I will then pick the best head and the best block. If I have an extra head/block, I will let you all know. Maybe someone will want to take it off of my hands.

I'm also getting my wiring harness and ECU from this guy. So, hopefully, I'll be straight on the main parts by the end of the week. I'm going to be ordering a bunch of rebuild parts. Not sure if I'm going to mess with the pistons/cams/rods, etc... yet. I just may go ahead and build a high-compression motor. However, I may just try to stick with what I have, and in a year I'll build it for low-compression/turbo.

We'll have to wait until I crack open these engines, and see what I have. If the pistons/rods are seriously jacked, then I might go high compression for now, turbo later.

didn't get the time to finish the "accessories". Now I'm very focused on the mechanical side. I was so happy

But hell, it IS a progress thread, so, I'll post some pics very soon. Everything cleaned up remarkably well, I was pretty amazed, considering how the interior looked when I took over ownership. Oh also, funny story about the EQ. It wasn't working consistently, it would dip in and out, so....

I opened it up to find out what the issue was. It has a sneaky little plug in there that has to be pressed down all the time, or it doesn't make good contact. I tried EVERYTHING i could think of to fix the connection, to no avail. of fixing it. So, the solution, find something to hold it down all the time.

It had to be non-flammable, and just the right size to sandwich in between the plug and the top of the EQ cover. So, after searching the whole yard, I found just the right sized rock. Yep, now it works fine.

I guess you could say: It's ROCK solid.

Get it! Get it!! ROCK solid....like, because it now has a rock in it.

Don't know yet. Looking in to it.

I'm not too versed on the ZC differences/similarities to the D16a1, other than higher compression internals.

I'm excited to have this engine, but a little worried as to if it will all bolt up the same as the d16a1 to a 3G Civic.

Can anyone confirm more about this ZC?

* What gen it is (is it 2nd gen (88-89 integra?)
* Are the manifolds and throttle body ZC pieces?

Thanks for looking!

Your car is coming along extremly nice. I am excited to see the finished product.

Its not a huge thing. But one of my favorite things you bought are the turn signals. They are AWESOME. probably my favorite thing about EAs

so, by "2g", do you mean the 88-89 version, or later?

I ask b/c many people call the "2g" ZC the one that is from the early 90's.

From my research thus far, there seems to be some differences and inconsistencies in what people call the different gens of this engine.

My best guess is that this engine is the 88-89 ZC.

yeah, i meant 88-89 version.

ive never looked at the two ZC side by side to be able to tell the difference.

We'll, we've now confirmed that the block is a ZC block, but I'm just sceptical about the head.

I did some research, and decide to go out and count the teeth on the cam gears.

I'm counting 40 teeth on each gear, and they are both labeled "pg6".

I've read numerous times that the ZC cam gears have 34 gears.

So, do this mean FOR SURE that I have an a1 head? Or was there some obscure inconsistency in Honda's manufacturing of one particular generation of ZC heads, in which the a1 AND ZC had the same number of teeth in their cam gears?

Also, you can tell from the pics below that the engine is even marked, probably by the exporter/importer, as being a "ZC Integra" engine. Why would they mark the valve cover as a ZC if the head wasn't a ZC head. Mega confused on that one. Is there a possibility that it's a ZC head with a1 cams and gears installed? Why would they do that though?

Anyway,
maybe a ZC master on here can clear this up for me.

My immediate concern is getting this engine in running condition, and, thus, trying to figure out which timing belt to order. A d16a1 belt, or a ZC belt. Or, does it even make a difference?

Also, any info. as to where I can get adjustable cam gears for the d16a1 or ZC would be greatly appreciated. As you can see, these are rusted, and don't look too swift.

I am pretty sure the ZC is the same as a D16A6 SOHC. Most all your parts come from that motor. Axles, motor mounts, header, intake manifold. But man it's been so long sense the last time I swapped a ZC.

After many changes in plans, the FINAL plan for this build:

Keeping stock d15. Too much wiring hassel for the ZC to work RIGHT NOW. Too much going on in my life, so I just don't have time for a swap that involved.

Stock D15. I bought a custom intake manifold and dual-side-draft carb set-up off of Ebay. Will be there this week.

Going to order a set of headers this week.

New clutch, gaskets, etc...

i cleaned the heck out of the engine and tranny this afternoon, but couldn't snap pics b/c I ran out of daylight. It took about 100 oz. of engine cleaner lol! They are now ready for a fresh coat of paint. Hopefully this upcoming rain will pass over in about two days to let me complete this task.

Progress will be updated daily, as I paint the D15 to get it looking purty, and paint the engine bay to match the exterior. I will then bolt on the new parts, and I hope to slip the engine back in within a week and a half, and send it off for carb tuning. I'm aiming for close to 90 hp and reliability here, along with a clean looking set-up. We'll see.

The ZC and D16a1 are going up for sale, for money for rims and tires.

Thanks for looking!

Updates:

I made some great progress over the last couple of days. Got the bay cleaned with degreaser and scotch-brited yesterday. This afternoon, I cam home, masked it off, and painted it with Duplicolor High-Heat Semi-Flat spray paint. Took about 2.5 cans to get the whole bay and front dam area with two good coats. I had a couple of spots that ran slightly, but they are not THAT bad. It was just a little bit too cold outside. I would have waited longer in b/t coats, but I had to finish a lot of stuff before sun down. Anyway, pics:

Prepped and ready to go.

http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/9523/img0074zu0.th.jpg (http://img340.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img0074zu0.jpg)http://img340.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif (http://g.imageshack.us/thpix.php)

After finished satin black paint:

http://img127.imageshack.us/img127/158/img0075pi4.th.jpg (http://img127.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img0075pi4.jpg)http://img127.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif (http://g.imageshack.us/thpix.php)

I also painted some small misc pieces black:

http://img379.imageshack.us/img379/2306/img0078oa1.th.jpg (http://img379.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img0078oa1.jpg)http://img379.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif (http://g.imageshack.us/thpix.php)

...as well as the A/C condensor:

http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/5008/img0079jc1.th.jpg (http://img152.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img0079jc1.jpg)http://img152.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif (http://g.imageshack.us/thpix.php)

In addition, I rotated the engine around and changed out the oil pan gasket. It was pretty rough. Also, most of the oil pan bolts were hand-tight! Man, between this and the wack valve-cover gasket, no WONDER I has such a big oil leak!!

I hope to paint the engine and tranny tomorrow.

I'll continue to update as I go.

Picked up an Si head and torque-step headers from a local guy who is also buying my ZC, D16a1, and ECU. Perfect!

Good friends Ben and RPR member Billy came over once again Saturday morning to give me some much needed assistance. Billy is a master, he did the following IN 18 DEGREE WEATHER, in an HOUR AND A HALF....

Pulled my head; broke it down;pulled my DX camshaft

Broke down the Si head, put my DX camshaft in it;cleaned and lubed head bolts; reassemble everything and torqued it all back down to spec

Cleaned to of the block and piston tops; cleaned bottom of head and valves

Reassemble everything with a new head gasket.

I'm no automotive genius or anything, but I just find that AMAZING! GREAT JOB BILLY!!

We did not deck the head, because the old gasket came off very smoothly. The two surfaces cleaned up very nice, and we feel that we can get by without doing this. It looked as if a head job was probably done within he last 12,000 miles, or so. I hope we are right! Only time will tell.

While he worked his mechanical magic, I have busy doing the following:

Cleaning and painting the whole engine and tranny, pretty much every last detail of it. I'll post pics up soon, once the iPhone decides to start working again. It is stuck in "recovery" mode, and apple support is closed on the weekends. ????!!!!!

The sidedraft dual-carb set-up is the ol' skool bomb-diggidy!

We are hoping to have the engine totally reassembled and ready to go back in on Wednesday, hopefully rolling around on 4 wheels again by this coming weekend.

Pics to come in the following days.

Turkey Day progress:

Nice warm weather for painting down here in NC! Got the hood and the inner lines of the front fenders in the bay painted today. I used all Duplicolor stuff. Man, I REALLY like their rattle can products!

1 coat of primer, (2) coats of "Wimbledon White", and (2) coats of clear. The Wimbledon White is a near EXACT match to my Chrysler Cool Vanilla. :)

I also got (2) more much needed coats of red on the valve cover. I used wrinkle black, baked it, then sprayed w/ high-temp red. However, coverage is TOUGH to get over the wrinkle black. Word to all: If you can't find it at the store, go ahead and order the wrinkle red, as my method is a LOT of headache. I used (6) coats of red, and STILL do not have perfect coverage! Of course, that could have to do with me being forced to spray in minus-50 degree weather too.

Tomorrow I hope to get the front end put back together. I need to do some front brake work as well, and mount up my new kicks. Also, I need to block sand the valve cover to expose the wording. If time, I may even try to mount the front lip, and then paint it. Will see.

Car will prob. not start until I get a replacement fuel line fitting. Here's the one on the right carb. It's currently cracked, and is spewing out bunches of fuel. :(

I'm going to try and order the fitting and a throttle-cable mount/bracket tomorrow and, if possible, get them overnight shipped to be ready to put in on Saturday. I REALLY want this car running by the end of the weekend.

Thanks for the info. TeinR!

Updates:

Progress is still moving forward....

Wednesday and Thursday were the only day's last week that I could get the time to work on the wagon.

I did get the valve cover finished. It took (6) total coats of red! (4), then bake, then (2) more! What a hassle.
Def. go with TeinR's advice, as he seems to have found a much easier method!

I finally block sanded the cover, and it now puts the necessary bling factor on to the 20-plus-year-old engine.

My in-law braised the cracked fuel-inlet fitting, and it pressure-tested just fine. So, were good to go there now.

We just need to fab a throttle cable adaptor cable for the carbs. I hope this will go smoothly.

We hope to get the car running, brakes done, and back on (4) wheels this weekend.

Oh, and the (4) wheels are extra special this time... Here's a sneak peak =)

I hope to post something more "meaty" at the end of the weekend. We'll see!

Thanks for looking.

Hey Bro!

Sorry, I was REALLY hoping to make this meet. The wagon is just not quite ready yet.

We hoped to finish last weekend, but were stumped by four issues:

(1) The axles I ordered from O'Rileys were the wrong ones. The inventory on their computers is wrong. They have the correct ones arriving (supposedly!) tomorrow morning. FIXED.

(2) The headers I had DID fit a d15a3 just fine, but were bumping into my 4WD transfer case on the tranny. So, they will have to be modified. In the meantime, I picked up a 87 Si exhaust manifold from a local CRX dude . It will flow a lot better than my stock wagon manifold. SOLVED.

(3) Fuel delivery problems to the carbs. Still a mystery that needs to be solved. Hopefully, sooner than later.

(4) Need to fab up a bracket to hold up the throttle cable above the intake manifold at the correct angle/distance. In-law coming to start making it tomorrow.

So, due to various parts not fitting, and not having little odds and ends parts (fittings, lines, etc...), my last two Saturdays have been depressingly un-productive.

I'm REALLY hoping to make some actual headway this weekend. It would be great to get the car back on four wheels again, and fully assembled, with the throttle bracket complete. Then, next week could be carb week, and I'll be off and running to the exhaust shop before christmas to complete this sector of the build.

Well see...I'll keep everyone updated.

Problems suck...lol...it is cool though...thanks for the update...I think this is one of two threads on here that I actually watch as far as builds go...they are thinking of doing a meet in Asheville in January, so I will keep you informed...
