View Full Version : Shadys Official Tear Down, Build Up, and Swap Thread!

So, after changing an oil pan gasket, and having the oil pan crack twice on me, she wouldnt start. Did a compression test, and heres teh results, from cylinder #1(timing belt side), to #4(tranny side): 165, 135, 65, 90. So, after ruling out the headgasket (it ran when I parked it, so it couldnt be the headgasket), and the rings (agian, it ran when it was parked), me and a couple of buddies think it might be a cracked block. And what a coincidence, my buddy has 3/4 of a B18a1 engine in his 'garage'. What better reason to swap it in. :D So, Im gonna be updating this thread (first post) with updated pictures, as I tear down, build up, and swap the B in. Keep in mind, I have no engine lift or anything, so Im tearing it down piece by piece. I gotta make a few calls, and see if I can get ahold of a lift to make things easier. :thumbs up

Yea, I put a Y8 head on it back last fall or so. Yep, thought of selling it as well, b/c Im tired of paying for it. But, after some thoughtful conversations w/teh wife, Im keeping it.

I think when the block cooled down, and since it didnt have the oil pan for its lower bracing, it cracked/warped. With the head off, theres no signs of cracking or anything. Gonna have to actually get the block out and clean it off real good, and see whatsup.

christ wires and lines everywhere! Tuck it while youre in there! Looking good tho...lots of progress.

Yea. Thats the next task on hand. Wire tuck, then a whole cleaning of the bay. Progress will slow down abit, due to the fact that I now need to start buying parts for the motor, on a very budget'ed income.

Looks good, why is your radiator overflow reservior black?

B/c I had it tucked under the radiator support, and it stuck out like a sore thumb. So I painted it black to blend in more. Depending on the turbo setup, I might put it back down there if room permits it.

Ok, as far as an update goes, grab a seat and a beer and read along.

So I traded my T25 turbo, y8 head, intake manifold, and some other minor stuff for that 'orange' B18a1 block. Which is all good and all, b/c it was already built w/new rings, bearings, seals, ect. So I picked up that other B18a1 motor for $55, minus the valve train and tranny I was gonna use for parts for the 'orange' motor. As me and my 'buddy' are starting to take the new motor apart, he gets the idea that he's gonna start pawning off the rods/pistons and crank to one of his other friends. Apperently, I agreed to this, yet I said nothing about the ordeal. My whole plan w/the $55 motor, was to take parts off I needed for the 'orange' motor, and sell the rest as a whole for money for more parts. Well, to get to the point, b/c I wont give his friend the parts, he wont let me use that 'orange' motor. So, I told him I want my turbo, y8 head and everything back, and he can give his friend parts off the 'orange' motor. So, now I need to get all new seals, bearings, and rings for the $55 motor. But, on a plus side, I get to have fun rebuilding it, and I can actually say its mine, b/c I payed for it. So, now Im set back about 2 weeks behind schedule. So, look for pics to be up of the rebuild here shortly.

Drink all your beer yet?

Yea, the anadized paint has two layers. A silvery-metallic base, then the actual color.

Small update. Got the block cleaned up alot. Still a few small dirty spots, but overall, its good enough for me. Dont plan on painting it, due to the fact its too damn cold to paint anything. Got the pistons/rods taken out so I can put new rings and rod bearings in, and have the rear main seal removed in preperation for a new seals. Progress is mad slow, b/c I need a new, better paying, job. But anywho's, heres a few pictures for you guys.

i really hope you don't plan on just slapping it together with new rings and bearings and expecting it to work...

you might as well just build it while its taken apart. you need to send that out to a machine shop to make sure everything is still good, and have them figure out what size bearings you need in each journal (for both the rods on the crank and mains on the block)

it looks sick so far :thumbs up: and i've always liked your car, make sure to cover your fenders and crap while working on it, you won't believe how many scratches will appear out of nowhere. my old car turned to shit after my swap, lol.

you also need to have a machine shop make sure the deck is straight (on both the head and block, and not warped) and make sure the cylinder walls aren't ovaled, it might need boring, and will definetely need honing. so i'd hold off before you order anything until you hear back from the machine shop.

you can also have the machine shop hot tank / acid dip the block and it'll look like brand new right out of the factory.

http://www.slowmotionmotorsports.com/uploads/photos/685.jpg

it'll look like that ^

honestly building it now is probably the best thing to do, because why spend all the money again with the machining down the line to build it when you could just do it now?

that motor loves boost btw 8)

Szady
11-27-2008, 11:25 PM
Thanks for the info man. The head came off a running motor, so Im positive its good. Block, Im pretty sure is good too. Im gonna plastiguage for the rod bearings, so I know I have the right size bearings in. Trust me, if I had the money to build this up while its apart, I would.

Coutts
11-27-2008, 11:37 PM
well you can't really just plastigauge and guess the bearings, you have to send it off to a machine shop and have the measure it (or if you have the necessary measuring equipment you can do the measurements yourself) to tell you the right size bearings.

you have to get a tool the measures bore size, and measure the bore size of each bearing seat (with the main caps on, and same procedure for the rods), then measure the thickness of the crank, and subtract to find the right size bearings.

but its completely possible your crank is ovaled and it needs machining.

honestly dude you need to machine that block, you can't just slap it together...i'm not trying to be a dick, i'm trying to make sure you don't waste all this money just to re build it and have to spend more to do it right.

do it right, do it once :thumbs up

Coutts
11-27-2008, 11:43 PM
and when you put it together, make sure to check every measurement and make sure its good, or it will come back to bite you in the ass lol.

as long as you have a haynes for a teg (For the b18b motor) you'll be fine. it walks you through how to do all the measurements and stuff.

keep us updated man, this should be a sick build :thumbs up

looking good ryan. ignore that lssqueer. noobs never know what theyre talkin about.

you dont need to take it to a machine shop unless your p2w is high. most likely it will be but depending on how high you might be able to go without boring it. i dont know the specs but im guessing it has to be within .001-.004

to build a motor, all you need is a feeler gauge set, telescoping set and a 0-3 inch micrometer set. i picked mine up for a total of 100 bucks. you can measure everything yourself and sell it all when your done.

Coutts

* in for destruction pics *\

like i said you could do all of the tests at home, with the right tools.

checking the deck straightness is easy (have to check both the head and block), just take a straight edge and run a feeler gauge under it and look for changes in the deck surfaces.

thats just my $0.02, i wouldn't waste the money on new bearings and rings (a ring set is like $100) just to slap a motor together and not do it right. do it right, do it once...or else you'll spend more money fixing what is now messed up because you took a short cut.

This isnt the first motor Ive built, so I kind of have an idea on what Im doing. And Im not gonna re-use rings that have god knows how many miles on them. The bearings look pretty worn, so its getting new ones. I appreciate your help, but no need for the "* in for destruction pics *\" comment. i'm not going to deny my past, but if you seriously plan on slapping a motor together with new shit and expecting it to work..gl..probably won't last long.

the bearings are worn, how do you know the crank wore evenly?
if its ovaled, you'll spin a bearing, and you need to send it off to a machine shop (or if you have $2k in tools) to find the right size bearing to use in each seat.
engine shit doesn't wear evenly, i can tell you that...

plus how do you know your cylinder walls aren't ovaled? i had that happen in my old ls/vtec motor. it all looked fine. machine shop said the walls were ovaled.

your deck could be warped and not know it, block could be cracked somewhere and you won't know it.

i was just trying to help you do it right and save you from doing it again. but its fine if you don't want it. i will stop wasting your thread.

i will watch this though because i am curious to see how it goes. gl man :thumbs up

Got the whole bottom end completely together. Gotta pick up like 3 head bolts (yea, 3. I know. I have 7 good headbolts, and no idea what happened to the rest of them. lol) then I can bolt the head down, and get the timing belt on.

Whats a good color to paint a stock header? Im not a big fan of the rusty-colored, 15 year old ceramic look on the stock header (gonna get an aftermarket one later on down the road, b/c money is tight, and I need my car back).

Should have pics up later on tonight or tomorrow sometime. :thumbs up
