Well well...I never thought this day would be coming anytime soon.

The trusty y7 spun a rod bearing earlier this week. I was on my way back from class and lost power on the highway. AWESOME.

Luckily, the highway was a bit more than a mile away from home.

At first, I was thinking about selling it all together and getting something else, but I think i've grown slightly attached to it.

I decided to keep the lil bugger and do my first swap. Nothing too big or fancy, I just needed something to get the car up and running asap. I have class and photoshoots that I need to get to so that I continue making a living off of it.

http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/7585/peteyswap1di2.jpg

My friends were able to hook me up with a great condition z6. SOHC VTAK POWA BABY.

OH yeah, you know what i'm talking about. The FURY that we all have come to love and adore.

I have everything for the swap, just gotta order a few more parts to get it running.

Parts List:

Exedy Stage 1 Clutch Kit - ORDERED Delivered and Installed
Fidanza 7lb Flywheel - ORDERED Delivered and Installed
BoomSlang ECU Jumper Harness ORDERED BIG Thanks to SchutzRacing..!!!!
Dizzy Jumper - ORDERED Delivered and installed Delivered
Alternator Belt - ORDERED Delivered
Energy Suspension Motor Mount Inserts - Lower torque mounts and upper motor mountsORDERED Delivered and Installed
Aluminum Radiator - ORDERED Delivered and Installed
Whale Penis Intake - ORDERED Delivered and Installed
Red AEM Fuel Rail INSTALLED
4-2-1 Header ORDERED

Whats Getting Done:

Cleaning up engine bay, it needs a good scrubbing. Might paint it battleship gray, not sure. On the fence about it.
Doing a wire tuck
Cleaning up block and possibly painting it. Powder Coating the valve cover and whatever parts might look good powder coated
Removing A/C
.

I'm going to take out A/C. I never use it and it'll make things much easier. It'll also give me more room if I decide to go boost. Now, I'm thinking about picking up a random header for it while i'm at it, and a lightened flywheel.

We're going to pull out my engine tomorrow morning. It's already at my buddy's shop. He's a great friend and a good person.

My car now is where the teal/green civic is in the pic:

http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/2232/peteyswap2vp9.jpg

BTW, thats half the garage.

I'm psyched. I know its not a B-Series, but its my first swap and at least its something a lil bit more peppy than the mighty y7. I'm excited to have the z6 and the different gearing of it.

I'll post updates daily as things go along..!

Update 11/15/08

Also updated on the first post

Hey all. Today was Eventful.

started around 11am today and pulled the car in between the lift:

http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/6140/swap3bc3.jpg

Then started to unbolt some things, unplug parts of the harness, take off the strut tower bar, etc:

http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/7341/swap4gn0.jpg

We really needed an extension for that one bolt

http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/412/swap5ba5.jpg

an hour and a half later or so:

Update 11/19/2008

Here's some shots from the other day that I forgot to post:

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/6396/swap10ig8.jpg

http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/7263/enginemz0.jpg

From Yesterday:

Got the bay cleaned up as much as I could. This shot doesn't show that we pulled off everything on the firewall that we could, in order to be able to paint it. Bay is all prepped for paint.
http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/8967/swap9bk1.jpg

Looky here - Traded a pack of cigarettes for this beauty..! I think it'll look nice.
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/4959/fuelrailow7.jpg

Took out the headlights last night too. They're being wetsanded, buffed and cleared while they are out.

11/20/08
The first part of many showed up on my doorstep this evening:

What could it be..!?!?
http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/5535/radgc3.jpg

All wrapped up in its bubble wrapped goodness
http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/217/img9835ha6.jpg

All aluminum radiator  Came pretty quick. I figured it would since its the only thing that I ordered that was in the same state.

11/23/08

We broke out the heat gun, heated up the section that we were spraying and then gently warmed up the paint after it was sprayed. It laid down nicely.
Here's some shots of the bay sanded:
http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/1505/bay1nw1.jpg

http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/7592/bay2xc0.jpg

Then we brought it inside, sprayed down the bay with some air to remove any debris and sanding dust and then started spraying:

Forgot to remove a clip that we didn't see before we started. Jay is there removing it.
http://img122.imageshack.us/img122/4139/bay3pl8.jpg

Got the passenger side sprayed, along with the radiator support:
http://img381.imageshack.us/img381/797/bay4hs6.jpg

Then the driver side:
http://img380.imageshack.us/img380/3826/bay5xe5.jpg

3/4's of it done here:
http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/2865/bay6kg5.jpg

Just got done spraying the firewall/all done:
http://img380.imageshack.us/img380/7111/bay8tw3.jpg

11/24/08

Got some more parts in....!!!!!

Clutch, Intake and dizzy jumper:

11/25/08
Got a lot done today. My fidanza 7lb flywheel came in today. So...we installed the clutch and flywheel.

Getting it installed:

http://img370.imageshack.us/img370/5038/newparts3pt2.jpg

How many miles did you have on the Y7 before it blew?

Or should the question be:

How hard did you drive it on a daily basis before it blew?

I hope it is due to the former and not the latter.

Going to be using the z6 Tranny. I'm going to sell the y7 head, intake manifold and tranny once its out. Those will be up for sale.

Everywhere I read, said that I can't use a non-vtec dizzy on a vtec engine, it won't run as well as it should.

Its all good, it was going to happen sooner or later.

The motor has exactly 150,000 miles on it. I drove it somewhat hard when I got the car 4-5 years ago, but since then it's been babied. All my friends can attest to that

I say just do what you wanted to with the bay and the tuck and then get the motor in there. worry about boosting it when you can afford to let it sit for a while and have work done. no need to hurry it. Good luck!

Goals for today:

Simple Green the engine bay - DONE, just needs to be prepped for paint
Tuck all the wires, hide HID ballasts, etc. - Ended up removing them so that the bay can be painted tomorrow
Paint engine bay gray - On Tomorrow's To-Do List....it was too cold to paint today.
Clean up z6 block, paint it silver, put on EBP valve cover. Cleaned up the block a bit. Once again, too cold to paint.

As a Parts update - I figured...i'll get a new intake..so I ordered the Whale Penis intake. Can't wait till that comes in. Also, I decided to get a light weight flywheel from fidanza. That, along with the exedy clutch has been ordered.

Also, we removed the rest of the AC piping/lines, they are all out. I also replaced my 10 gauge amp power wire and ground for 4 gauge, which the amp really needs.

Still thought it was kind of a dick comment.

a swap is a swap. They're just being encouraging...and i appreciate it. My friends want me to paint the bay gray, but i'm not sure..so i figure i'd ask what you guys would think too.

I wish I could be swapping in a B...maybe a K later on (jumping on the "oh yeah..i'ma K my car sometime" bandwagon")

This is probably one of the biggest things i've done to my car..in a while...haven't been too active recently because of school and working on websites and junk.

Anyway, Thanks for the comments, I appreciate your input.

Thisisoriginal- no, i'm not going to paint the car battleship gray but, the use of it is so that you can see any potential cracks or what have you...in the bay before things get worse. I think it might look good, with blue fenders, gray engine bay and blue valve cover, then the whale penis intake.

I think a really, really dark gray would look alright in the engine bay.. But then again, I also think ebp would look even better. Great to see you doing your first swap. When your done, you'll feel great about it and that's all that matters. Good choice on the z6 tranny, you'll love it.. I love mine :D

Go pete goooooo! BTW bro, Im getting into photography..I gotta hit you up about stuff! ;)
Definitely man. I'm always online whenever you need to get in contact with me. I think you have my number.

I think a really, really dark gray would look alright in the engine bay.. But then again, I also think ebp would look even better. Great to see you doing your first swap. When your done, you'll feel great about it and that's all that matters. Good choice on the z6 tranny, you'll love it.. I love mine :D

and who cares if he has fans.. he has a great looking car and people are drawn to that. True it would be more exciting if it were a B series, but I was absolutely giddy after i successfully did my 5 speed swap. Keep up the good work petey
I'm just happy to have something that'll be a bit more peppy, especcially with the new clutch and flywheel, etc and the intake.
lookin good petey! its always nice to upgrade. :thumbs up

you realize a b16 is the same size right? so why would that be 100x more exciting?

its ok petey

we all <3, dohc swap or not
i dont know about everyone else but hell, i get excited whether if its an engine swap or a new shift knob. New stuff is new stuff, and being able to share in the experience while you cant work on your own ride is what a tuning community is about.
:thumbs up
because he just swapped a B series in, so your gay if you have a D now lol

anyways, have fun with the swap. my y7 did the same shit just with 160,000 miles.

Parts List:

Exedy Stage 1 Clutch Kit - ORDERED
Fidanza 7lb Flywheel - ORDERED
ECU Jumper Harness ORDERED
Dizzy Jumper
Alternator Belt - ORDERED
Energy Suspension Motor Mount Inserts - ORDERED
Aluminum Radiator
Whale Penis Intake - ORDERED

Whats Getting Done:

Cleaning up engine bay, it needs a good scrubbing. Might paint it battleship gray, not sure. On the fence about it.
Doing a full wire tuck

Also updated on the first post

Hey all. Today was Eventful.

started around 11am today and pulled the car in between the lift:

Then started to unbolt some things, unplug parts of the harness, take off the strut tower bar, etc:

We really needed an extension for that one bolt

The only thing that i've noticed so far (since it's not installed yet) is the weight difference. This one is much lighter than the stock one. Not sure if thats going to cause a difference. The plastic neck on my oem one broke, so i decided if i went with aluminum, i would have less of a chance of that happening again. I think it'll look nice too.

It looks like we might have to extend the cruise control wires, but it looks like the passengerside can be uncliped and ran through the firewall and clipped back in. Seems like there is enough slack in the lines to be able to do that.

Updated here, as well as on the first post.

Got the passenger side sprayed, along with the radiator support:

Then the driver side:

3/4's of it done here:

Just got done spraying the firewall/all done:

I got the intake from eBay actually. Stroke of luck..!

The way the seller had it listed, the item ended sunday morning. And if you're an avid eBay seller...you know that there are not too many people on eBay on sunday morning. So, paid $14.75 for the intake, and $15 for shipping...around $30 total. The seller had two listed. The other one sold for $45 shipped. The seller was a liquidator of some sort, out of PA.

Coutts

i just did this swap in my ek coupe before i sold it, its a bit annoying (have to change some stuff). heres what you'll need to do:

you have to use your obd2 harness, because the chassis is obd2, and then convert down to an obd1 ecu, for the motor to run off of.

so first step, take your obd2 harness, and cut the injector plugs off, you need to splice in the injector plugs from your obd1 harness (if you want to use the injectors that come in the z6) or just swap the injectors out for your y7 ones (not sure if they might be different sizes or not, i wouldn't mess with swapping injectors).

next you need to either use an obd2 alternator on the swap, or do what i did and splice the obd1 alternator plug onto the obd2 harness (because my alternator failed to come out, bolt was stuck lol).

the dizzy will need converting too. order a conversion harness from rywire (like i did), to convert an obd1 dizzy to work on an obd2 harness, or you could cut and splice all the wires together, but i paid for the rywire harness, plug&play ftw!!

then just use an obd2-obd1 conversion harness and convert down to a p28 ecu (stock z6 ecu) and you'll be good!

if you have extra cash, that y7 is waiting for a low compression rebuild for boost 8)

if you have any questions man just hit me up on aim, i just went through this exact same swap :thumbs up:

the z6 compared to my d15b7 in my eg weren't all that different. the z6 deffinetely was more powerful, but i hardly noticed, and the gearing wasn't much different either, only thing i noticed was 5th gear was shorter.

the feeling of accomplishment of when it starts when you're all done will be amazing. just hope your luck isn't like mine, where it develops a rod knock a week later

those torque mounts are what do most of the work. the two top mounts are only to cradle and suspend the engine. when you rev it "torques", your mounts handle this. if anything keep the torque mounts and dont worry about the post mount and trans mount.

After thinking about it, I figured..."well, they're torque mount inserts...they'd help too...so whynot keep them and have 5 mounts with inserts."
Why not just use both sets...?

The more I thought about it, the more i'm just going to keep them and use all 5. might as well.
