well i figure its about time that i finally start one of these, im still figuring out some details about possibly trading my coupe for a hatch, but until then i am going to be building up a motor until all that gets figured out.

Yesterday i went out and looked at a d16y8 engine block this guy was sellin on CL for $100...I looked at it and needless to say i picked it up. I also snagged a vtec head for $100 (missing fuel rail and injectors). So today i spent 2 hours at the hobby shop cleaning up the block, heres what it looks like so far.

next weekend ill be cleaning up the head and getting id ready to be powder coated. heres the way it looks now.

If anyone has a d-series crank and/or vtec ecu laying around lmk i need one!! lol...

Whats to come:
forged pistons and rods
aluminum crank pully
upgrade fuel pump and injectors.
aftermarket fuel rail
and of course turbo

Im still debating if i wanna do some head work (titanium internals), any input would be appreciated, thanks for lookin guys...will update often...

There is a build thread. That's pretty spendy for a D block...

Really? Damn thought it was a decent price, no worries tho. I'm thinking about getting an aftermarket IM and TB, should I just use oem ones?

its a build so you might as well make more power. get a nice skunk2 intake mani and throttle body or you could always mort and polish the oem parts

Thats what I was leaning towards replacing the oem parts with aftermarket stuff, i just gotta figure out if i wanna dive into the head and replace that stuff with titanium internals or not,

do you plan on upgrading the cam? if so then i would definetly upgrade. most cams even say they require it.

im not too sure, i think ill just leave the head the way it is now, ive been doing some reading and mostly everyone has left theirs stock.

SGGilmo
03-02-2009, 02:15 PM
then you may be fine without it. but it still may be a good idea with a turbo and all.

03-02-2009, 02:37 PM
ill do some research for some internals for the head tonight and see what i can find. I would like to be able to run 15-20psi every once and a while and not be too worried about throwing a rod. Anyone know anything about turbo timers?

Where are you located at? Is the crank ready to be dropped in or do I need to get it turned? And yes I am building for boost... I've never had a turbo'd car b4 so this will be a learning experience.

florida. i would have a machine shop inspect it and probably micro polish it (somthing you will want to do in your build anyway) i doubt its out of spec so it shouldnt need to be turned.

Go with vitara pistons and Eagle H beam rods.. they will treat you good and will only run you bout $500 total with new rings, bearings, etc. ARP headstuds for sure as well.

i was definately considering the Eagle H beam rods :rocker:, doin some more research on the vitara pistions, thanks for the input much appreciated! :D.

On another note im thinking about painting the engine block, the bay will be a teal color to i was something that will just be like POW!...any suggestions?

So as of this morning I am now a proud owner of an eg hatch :headbang:Ö it was a straight trade. Hereís what it looks like now as it sits.

The car used to be red but is now a grayish black primer:brickwall:, its not gonna stay like this for too long, I plan on doin the necessary body work then paint the exterior white. The owner before me decided to remove the bronze paint on the ls wheels. So im gonna take them to the hobby shop here shortly and finish removing the paint and then repaint the wheels bronze.

Interior

These GSR seats that are in the pics are up for sale! Shoot me some offers if anyone is interested, Iím located in Virginia Beach. They are in good condition, I just donít want them. :D

Ok now here is my question. In these next two pics I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find these trim pieces? Ive looked at the local junk yards and havent found anything. I know in my coupe these areas were covered my carpet.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c222/partyhardy89/hatch/DSC01485.jpg

The trunk is already partially torn down which is fine with me! I plan on stripping out the whole interior and repainting it teal just like the engine bay.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c222/partyhardy89/hatch/DSC01480.jpg

Engine Bay

Heres a shot of the engine bay, the gsr strut bar came with the car, i installed it when i got the car back to my house, in a few weeks, hopefully sooner the engine bay will be stripped out and patined teal. But for the time being this is how it looks now!

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c222/partyhardy89/hatch/DSC01474.jpg

Now that I have the car that I wanna build, im going to wait to build the motor until the car is where I want it to be. My plans right now are to save up for my suspension then move on to the wheels/tires.
I have my mind made up on a good set of coilovers, I just donít know if I wanna use the tein ss or the Omni ones. As for rims im going to get the Rota Grid Racing in the sports bronze. Ill keep you guys updated as often as I can!!

SGGilmo
03-07-2009, 08:10 PM
before you pull out the grinder go to walmart and get some oven cleaner, the kind that doesnt require you to heat the oven. spray that stuff un there and let it sit for a few minutes and then wipe it off. the anno or paint should come right off with it. ive done this several times with r/c car parts. works great. oh and make sure your in a well vented area.

Ok so I've been tryig to find what type of head i have... I've done a search on the head code on google and have come up with nothing, ive also searched on here and other honda forums and i still cant find shit, so im turning to you guys, hopefully someone can help me out here. The code is D08-6 9/5 (stamped on the right side of the code) I have found that the D08 heads are mainly the D16 heads but i havent found the -6 part, so i dont know, so I searched the cam gear code which is PM3B, now that came back as either the D16Z6 head or the D15B vtec head, so i have no damn clue lol....anyone? :brickwall:

On another note i got bored today and mocked up the head to the block

my guess is its a z6 head. the d15b and z6 heads are almost identical and share the same cam gear. the only difference is the d15b has a slightly more agressive cam. and bing the d15b is harder to find i would say you got a z6. could be wrong though but im saying 98% sure.

93DXCoupe
03-11-2009, 05:52 PM
is there any other signs that i could use to look? or eliminate the fact thats a D15?

my D16 cam has "PM3B" and "041" stamped into it.
My D15 says "PM3B" and "9N1"

does your cam gear have another set of numbers on it?

93DXCoupe
03-11-2009, 06:31 PM
yes 561, thats to the left of the PM3B

SGGilmo

can't tell by the gear. All 88-95 non VTEC motors use the same PM3 gear.

that was kind of interesting but not sure if its true.

I got as far as i could, i didnt have the valve spring compressor to remove the springs, valves, and retainers. A few days later i took the head over to a buddies house and we removes the rest of the valvetrain. Also this is what the head looked like before i dropped it off at the machine shop to get hot tanked.

Now im going to start with the engine build, my friend who is helping me put this car together, we sat down and came up with a list of internals that we will be using to push massive amounts of air thru this little d-series. so far this is what we have come up with.

Head:
Skunk2 IM
Hondata IM gasket
AEM fuel rail
AEM adjustable fuel pressure regulater
RCE 440 injectors
Walbro 255lph fuel pump
Skunk2 Titainum valve springs and retainers
Skunk2 Valves
Crower Stage 2 turbo cam
AEM cam gear

Bottom end:
Vitara pistons
Eagle rods
moroso oil pan

thats all i can really think of off the top of my head. Some time later this week ill be stripping out the interor of the hatch to see the condition of the body. hopefully the weather will hold up this week!

And last here is a list of stuff that I will be doing to the car.

Plans:
Fix all dents and rust
fill in holes on passenger side moldings.
shave badges on trunk and hood
wet sand and respray duckbill spoiler (clear coat)
spoon style mirrors
pull motor and clean engine bay
rip out interior and grind it out
paint engine bay and interior (doorjams and all) teal
Get car sprayed Championship White
16" Rota Grids (gold)
upgrade to gsr breaks on all 4 corners

The interior will all (accepts from the front seats to the trunk) be put back in after it has been painted. Im sure i left out some other stuff but if i remember ill be sure to post it, Sounds like i have my hands full.... ill update as mus as possible!!

alrighty, little up date! my friend gave me a harness bar, with harnesses. In the process of selling my mesh wheels. Skunk2 springs are on order and should be here next week. Ordering Rota Grids next week along with some KDW's. Gonna finish up the suspension work then start ordering parts for the motor build. Waiting for the weather to clear up and ill take pics of the car. oh and backseat has been removed, same as passenger seat.

Just finished putting second coat on one wheel, took alittle longer than expected, I have before and after pics that ill up load tomorrow when I wake up.

While I was waiting for the first coat to dry I went a head and ordered some blox lcas, asr subframe brace w/24mm sway bar , beaks lower tie bar, and an x-brace for the rear strut mounts. For the mosy part my suspension is finished, just waiting for parts. Now its time to start on the motor :).

Going to finish other 3 wheels tomorrow, ill post pics of the one I finished when I wake up tho.

definatly get that Prop valve bro... find one on here or ebay, or a junk yard (any 94 up integra). without that 4040 valve the braking force will be incorrect for the disks.

also, try and find a 1" master cylinder... i just installed mine, and i can say it seems to be a nice upgrade!

So you are spending all that money on skunk2 stuff for the head but you are going with suzuki vitara pistons? cheap ass. Get some forged ones. And you didn't need to take apart the rocker arm assembly off the oil rails. What was the point in that? You do know that you are gonna have to notch the bottoms of the cylinder walls to clear the rods. I just built my friends entire engine like you are wanting to. Really simple engines. I've built one for myself a few years ago.

Cheap ass?? Fyi this is ny build not yours, ill put apc stuff on this car if I want to, not that im going to but keep ur negative comments to ur self. I did my research on the vitaras and liked what I had read. Thanks for info on notching the block, ill look in that. I wasn't hating on you little engine that could, I'm just saying that you are gonna have 7.5:1 compression, which is going to be awful out of boost where you will be doing 95% of your driving. You MUST notch the block in order to get the rods to clear the bottoms of the cylinder walls though.
And as for the canadian si, what stumps you about the rear disc brakes? even all the si's down here have em'.

shit my bad. no it has DRUM breaks, not disks thats what was confusing me. I know the Si's have the rear disks. I see ur point with the CR being too low. I'm going to go talk to the machine shop that I took my block to have dip tanked about them notching my block.

heres an update but i dont have pics, camera is dead and i cant seem to find my charger... well i got new upper a arms, cause it didnt have any when i picked it up from the junk yard so now the front suspension is all put back together, i raised the back and removed the drum breaks and installed the rear disk conversion. one thing i noticed with the prop valve is i have more break lines than the new prop valve will allow...any ideas? also i installed the ASR supframe brace, sway bar, beaks lower arm bar, and the skunk2 lcas. I ran into a slight problem with the old shock bolt on the stock lcas, yeah it was snapped off, lucky me.....so i need either a hack saw or a drill, anyone have this problem? I need to get these stock shocks back so i can install the lowering springs then throw on the slips. one last thing i think i am missing the sway bar end links for the rear, any clue where they bolt up to? thanks guys much appreciated ill get pics up as soon as i can.
