View Full Version : 96 LX won't crank. All it does is click.

Okay. I have a 96 LX that is basically all stock except for a remote start. It had about 340k on it before it blew up and put a hole in the block. I bought a new engine for it with 127k. Put in the engine, along with a new manifold. Got it all hooked up, full of fluids and ready to go, and all it did when I tried to start it was click. I could hear the fuel pump engage and all the lights horn etc all worked. Thought it was the starter so I replaced that, same thing happened. Then replaced ignition switch; no change. Read some forums and it said to clean the grounds so i did that; same problem. Oh and I checked all the fuses and they're all good. Pleeeeeease help me. I've dropped almost $2000 in this car and I don't want to give up now.

It wont crank or turn over or do anything at all. No way to check that. All I hear is the starter making a click when I turn the key.

Check the battery. Check fuses. Work your way in from that...

Theres always a way to troubleshoot

All fuses already checked along with the battery. All are good. Battery is basically new and has been charged extensively

Spark? Check your dizzy, wires, and plugs
Fuel? Filter plugged, can you hear the fuel pump when you turn the key to aux
Air? Take your filter off
Sensors? Check all the wires to your sensors around the intake. Make sure nothing is unplugged or severed

Air filter is already off, sensors have been quadruple checked and none are severed, and I can hear the fuel pump. I've literally checked everything over and over again for a few weeks. It won't do anything but click in the starter.

You can try taking the plugs out and putting a little fuel in each cylinder. Clean the plugs while your at it. Oh and check your timing, could have jumped a tooth or two

I don't see how that would help if the engine isn't turning over or cranking or anything at all. Can you explain more?

Will the engine turn over manually?

Is your main relay good?

Yes the engine turns over manually. How do I check the main relay? I'm not quite sure what that is....

If you hear clicking then the starter is getting power. So that means your not getting air, fuel, spark, or your timing is off

U said i checked all the electronic stuff. Main relay would be included in this.

And have u actually tested the battery or are u assuming it works cuz u charged it?

Can you tell me where the main relay is exactly so I can double check it again? And I hooked up jumper cables to the battery and tried starting it while jumping it from my brothers SUV so I really don't think it's the battery

Hey mine does that sometime too. I just made my own wiring connecting the starter wire (the one that slides on no the bolted one) to the firewall where it goes and spliced in a wires for a push to start button so I can test it easily when it happens but I don't get stranded anywhere when i need to use the car. Test the voltage the starter is getting when you turn the key. Mine gets 5-6v when it's acting up so if yours gets about the same were having the exact same problem and I'll keep you updated if I figure it out. Everyone tells me grounds or a short somewhere but I haven't found it yet.

Is the engine the exact same that came out of the car? What are you working with? Block, ecu, obd?

Hey man I did what you said and I got it to crank over finally! What do I need to fix it now?

What you made a push to start button? I don't know I'm still trying to find the problem, just roll with the push button for now and I'll let you know if I figure out the problem. Mine does it intermittently whenever it wants so I'm still trying to figure out the problem.

Well I kinda did. I just took a wire and held it from the negative battery cable and then hooked it up to the starter and it cranked right away. Does that narrow it down at all?

If thats the case then Im guessing its a ground. Charging the battery is fine, but have you had it checked yet? Take it to advanced, they'll do it for free. Im thinking it might be overcharged, or that there is something wrong with the neg pole on the batt.... just guessing though...
