hey guys. i need your opinions. i went around yesterday to different auto body shops to get an estimate on how much it will be to paint my car. i want them to totatally scrape off the paint down to the bone and then primer. the car has two coats of pain, the oem paint and a cheap ass maaco paint respray thats already peeling. it needs no bodywork. then i want them to paint it gunmetal or something close to it. i got 3 estimates, cause not alot of shops were open, but there prices were as follows; 2500, 2000, and 4000. To me thats alot. Those prices are more then how much the car is worth and what i paid for. one of the guys were telling me that it was hard to scrape off paint and to take off the side moldings and the mudflaps and stuff like that and he'd have to charge extra. so my questions are, could i get a cheaper job, were these guys ripping me off? Cause if they are i want to look around more, im looking to spend around 1G, maybe a little bit more but thats it. Thanks for your help.

the car to be painted. possibly gunmetal or silver, like the sedan in my avatar.

There is NO way you are going to get what you want done for 1G, there is simply too much labor involved. If you somehow do manage to get it done for 1G, it will be done so shitty that it wouldnt be worth it.

When it comes to paint, if you want something done right, and done well, you have to spend the money. 2000 dollers sounds like a good deal, but even that is cheap.

For my '69 Cougar it was 3500 for new quarters, fabricated wheel wells, primer, all jams, motor compartment, paint and clearcoat. Yours should only run you about 5~600 for materials but labour is expensive if you want them to strip it right down to the bare metal and start over on a fresh "canvas" so to speak it will cost you more.

Sorry, thats in Canadian, so 3500 = 2685 and 5~600 = 384~460. Hope that helps :D

how hard is it to take the paint off yourself? then prime it. All you would have to pay for then is the paint.

There's 4 ways that I know of to take the paint off, glass beading or sand blasing which need windows and everything taken out, some chemicals that are messy that eat the paint and good old sanding. Just look in the phone book under "painting contractors" and look for a one of the methods listed above.

The 4000 is a ripoff, but the 2 and 2.5 should be fair. You can get it done cheaper, but it wont be a good job. Make sure you get a lifetime warranty with the 2.5 tho.
