Well ever since I was very young my passion in life has been basically everything automotive, and I want to make a career being something like an automotive technician, I basically just want to work on vehicles. I'm currently trying to get a job at a local Penzoil Jiffy Lube, Yes I would be perfectly comfortable doing that all day. Even things like routine maintenance is fun to me ^_^

I plan on going to a Vocational school but how would I go about getting ASE certified and so on?

Yea, because trying to get a job at a place that only hires ASE certified is going to hire you because you were taught by another mechanic.

You sir are an idiot.

Go to school, but I'd suggest something like WyoTech.

I would like to work under the wing of someone but I'm afraid those days are pretty much gone, it's all about being certified nowa days you know?

Would'nt it be difficult to get into Wyotec? I actually have in the past and still wante to go there.

One of the Certification Requirements to become an ASE Parts Specialist (either automotive or medium/heavy duty truck) is 2 years on the job work experience. I think that's pretty much standard for all fields in ASE.

2 years hands on.

let me rephrase that...

get in as a lube tech, tell them you want to advance, and they will teach you as long as you show progress

you sir are an idiot. how do i know ur an idiot? because i know many techs that have done this, and many dealerships that actually prefer this. but hey, what do i know, im an "idiot"

I was talking to my Father the other night and he told me about that, he said you can basically go to a dealership, and just start out sweeping and so on and tell them you're interested in advancing and if they see you working hard they will really consider sending you to training after a while.

most companies don't hire unless you have work exp.
anyone can go to school and learn cars. they want someone with proven experince.
hence 2 years work exp requirement to get ASE certified.

My bro went to Wyotech and job placement couldnt find him a job in sac because he didn't have relevant work experience.

I've heard of WyoTech and UTi, but don't know anything about them. It sounds like a good idea.

My mechanic works at a Honda dealer and he said they were going to pay for him to go to become ASE certified, but had to stay at the dealer for two years. Well, two years went by and he moved and went to another dealership.

It'd be awesome to have a dealer to pay for you to go to WyoTech or UTi, but gotta get it in writing.

When I was a Service Writer we hired students at Lincoln Tech all the time.

You know what they did for us?

Mounted tires.

Changed oil

for the same pay as a new hire off the street. I didn't make the rule, that's just the way it is.

ok. I am just about to graduate from Wyotech with my Assoc. Degree in Applied Service Management with Auto. Tech. I have very mixed views on this school and the whole "road to glory with going to school".

I did learn a lot of shit at Wyotech, being from very detailed things you won't ever need to know to things you want and will need to know on a daily basis. Its awesome I have a 2 year degree but this won't transfer to another 4 year school, so your screw there if you want to contunie your education with that type of degree. They give you a good starting ground to work from, but you have to work hard to get that knownledge. Class sizes, close to 60 kids to 3 instructors......Come on now. These guys are instructors for reasons, they are tired of wrenching and this is easier paycheck for them in reality, don't have to worry about flat rate and make there money that way.

They will say you will have tons of offers from employers when you are about to graduate wyotech, thats not the case. You have to go out there and see who wants who andwhat they are looking for. I have a job at CarMax right now as a Service Consultant cause I know I don't want to be a tech. Not going to be working with them cause they have no opening in my area and I am not willing to relocate right now in my life, so thats my fault. I love working on cars but in no need am I wanting to work on others every single day and fight to get my hours up, so that tis why I am going the Service route and working with customers.

This school def. isn't for ppl who have never touch or know much about cars. Need to have somewhat of a background. They blow through the basics big time and they whole way you take tests before actually doing the work is bullshit. The school is nazi and didn't your degree is a pain in the ass cause of all the stupid rules but hey its school, right? My roomate died and they didn't decided until the last day of grading period to let me know if I would get my points back or not for missing days because of his death and funeral.

The job placement and how they say they help you with a job is a joke in itself but I didn't expect to be though. I have the view of you go out and get your own job by going out and seeing whats out there.

I can go on and on about things and give my views, if I would do it again I'd:

Get into a dealership, get some work exp. Talk to Higher end dealerships you want to work for and see what they want out of you and what type of training they need and want and go from there. This way you don't piss away 25 grand by going to Wyotech.

that is good and all but many ppl don't get so lucky to have this. They rare to see that starting out in a Merc. Dealership with no prior tech exp.

def go to school. make sure to take the ASE tests while or directly after you are in/done with school so it is all fresh in your head. that is what all the mechanics at my shop tell me to do.
