When the my civic starts up there is a tapping noise coming from the valve cover area. After about one minute it goes away as the motor gets warmer. I heard this is normal for high mileage civics and I shouldn't worry about it but i would like to get another opinion. Also The tapping noise frequency matches the engine rpm.

1998 civic dx

183,000 miles

5 speed.

12.8:1 Ls/vtec

IT'S OVER NINE THOUSAND!!

It is a normal Honda noise...

However some of it can be helped....

New oil Pump and a valve Adjustment can help.....

Also make sure you run a good quality oil, I prefer Synthetic for that kind of mileage...

Stay away from:
Fram Fileters
Honda Filters (made by fram)
Penzoil
Quaker State

Go with:
Valvoline, Castrol, Mobile 1

Filter:
Purolator from Advanced is great and good price
Most other filters are fine, Wik if you can find it is great

These are my opinions and possible solutions but no guarantee ...

Funny you say fram, because i just put a fram oil filter in last oil change, and since then this tapping noise has come about.
