1998 Civic EX - Tachometer malfunctioning

What causes my tachometer to not operate sometimes and any suggestion on how to repair it. I believe the instrument cluster is all electronic so I just can't replace just the tachometer... or could I?

Test it to see if it's getting a signal from the distributor, look behind the cluster for a blue wire going to the tach.
If the tach is jumping, because you say it operates sometimes, it could be an ignitor going bad.

Thank you for your reply. Actually the tach, when operating, doesn't jump it either works correctly or sometimes it doesn't work at all. When you indicated that my ignition could be going bad are you referring to the distributor or the ignition coil?
