1994 LX exhaust question...

I have a 1994 Civic LX which is going to need some exhaust work to pass inspection. The cat is fine. From the cat back is where I have problems. What is the 15" piece of pipe that is about 20" back from the cat? It looks like a "mini-muffler".....even though I know it is not the muffler (I just just trying to do my best to describe it. The reason I am asking is that I need to cut that section out and I had planned on replacing it with just a 1.5" I.D. pipe. Will that cause any problems.

PS.....

Here is a link to a picture of an aftermarket exhaust and you can see the piece clearly in the picture (it is about 12" on the cat end of the pipe).

It's a resonator, it will change the tone of the exhaust out of the pipe but shouldnt have any or much effect on the emissions.

As nismo said, it will not effect emmissions just exhaust tone/ volume. I had mine cut-out when I did my exhaust.
