99 civic has intermittent soft clutch pedal

Okay, so the clutch pedal was soft. I checked the reservoir and it had low fluid. I added fluid and the pedal immediately stiffened up. GREAT! Got up this morning and soft again. I rechecked fluid and it was still full. I drove it about five miles...still soft. I pulled over, rechecked and still full fluid level. I sat there and pumped the clutch rapidly and it stiffened back up. What could be causing the intermittent problem.

I would start by bleeding the system and replacing the fluid.

Thanks so much. I've never bleed a clutch before. Guess I'll look into doing that.
I just did mine yesterday.

Locate the bleeder valve on the slave cylinder. Have a friend hold down the clutch pedal and then you loosen the bolt on the bleeder valve. Tighten it back up and then have your friend lift up on the pedal. Repeat these steps until only fluid comes out. Make sure the clutch master cylinder stays topped off, if it gets too low you will have to start all over.

Good luck! Takes like five minutes.
