Automatic 96 honda civic

I know almost nothing about cars but I want to slowly learn what I can . My question is that since my car is an automatic does that mean it is not compatible with the same engines as a manual version of my car ? If so which engines should I look into. Nothing over the top expensive but just to step my game up a bit and get some extra speed.

It will be compatible, but, unless your current motor isn't operating properly, swapping a motor into an automatic isn't worth it. I would recommend doing an automatic to manual swap first. If you don't know how to drive stick, learn it.
