Automatics are damn convenient, but what people take issue with is that they can make driving less fun, and also less engaging in the act of driving, which frees drivers to pay less attention, which causes them to get in more wrecks, etc.

Also, automatic transmissions that haven't been given the basic maintenance of fluid changes are time bombs, they can be prone to developing issues at a moments notice, and then if the owner flushes the fluid the crud that's been building up is knocked loos and kills the transmission. It's a surprisingly common problem with older cars. Just happened to my roommate back in February.

CVTs are amazing. They allow the engine to always run at peak power or peak efficiency. But that means the engine doesn't "rev" and a lot of drivers get put off by that, so the manufacturers squash the benefits of CVT by programming the engine to rev like an older car anyway, which gets you less power and less gas mileage but is more comfortable to drivers.

The largest complaint about all automatic trans is that they steal both engine horsepower and mpg.
