Crunching/Creaking Noise When Turning

I've noticed a crunching/creaking noise coming from the front left wheel when i make a tight turn, say 90 degrees. I've looked around and think it MAY be the ball joint or tie rod causing it.

If that is the case, how big (expensive) of a job would this usually be for a mechanic or would it be something that is relatively easy to fix myself?

Additionally if you don't think it's either of these I'd appreciate the feedback.

Creaking sound is bushings, but you'd hear that with turns and bumps. Crunching during a turn is a CV that is worn or missing some teeth.
It's important to keep up on the maintenance schedule because a $20 boot could cost you hundreds in the long run.
