so this was the reading. my mechanic said that I would need another transmission soon. this code appeared last year too. however, my trans feels good and it runs smooth. anyone had experience with this reading???

i have 97 civic , EX, 197,000 miles. i change trans oil and its good.

-there was also another reading, something about "clutch system" issues, mechanic said its related to the transmission fault.

so the engine light came back 2 weeks ago and I finally got the readings this weekend. I will post them here. Also, im going to further research these codes online and see what i find.

Mac Tools OBD 2 was used to get the readings:

1. Transmission Control System, P0700 1/2

2. Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Circuit, P0740 2/2

The car runs smooth, no signs of bad transmission, does not slur, does not lag, switches gears the same way as always, I feel no loss of power. however the transmission fluid was changed 2 years ago, at around 180,000 miles, before that I never serviced the transmission oil since i first bought it, it had 67,000 miles.

This is the 3rd or 4th time the light has come up, its the second time i have done the reading and both point to the same thing, as posted above.

any advice is helpful.

The p0700 is like a default code. If you go to engine codes and there is a fault in the trans this is the code that will be there. The p0740 is the fault code. The TCC code is something that does NOT affect the shift pattern. The torque converter clutch is what we (transmission specialist) call "lock up". It Locks up after your transmission has shifted through all the gears and you are doing over 45 mph. When it locks up your rpm's can drop anywhere between 50-500 rmp's. If your watching the tach on most cars you can see it lock up or you can here it in the exhaust. It is one of three things,

1). Your solenoid is bad or going bad
2). Your TCC solenoid wiring is bad
3). Your torque convertor clutch is bad

Any of the three are going to consist of your trans coming out. The solenoid and wiring are inside of the trans and cannot be messed with unless you pull the trans in half. So, your mechanic is right. It does need to be rebuilt or replaced. If the shop doesn't know how to rebuild Honda's then they will tell you it needs to be replaced. It will probably be more expensive this way too..

thanx for your advise, so thats dreadful news. Sigh.

If i continue to drive the car how long before it will break down?? roughly.

also, what is you advice on fixing this issue, replacing the trans or rebuilding the trans? my mechanic said replacing it with another transmission would be the best option because a rebuilt transmission is not a guarantee it will last. Where as another transmission that has never been rebuilt may last longer.

Also, a different transmission swap is another option, such as a gsr transmission. not sure what would be the gains though. my trans is currently an automatic, and I've always wanted it to be manual.

Your best bet would be to put a 5 speed in it. It is never certin how long it will last. It would be best to rebuild that one if you want to keep an automatic. If like your mechanic says a "new" trans means one from a junkyard. Unless he buys a new one from honda. But like I said earlier that will be very expensive. I personally would swap to a 5 speed.
