Transmission differences between body types

I'm currently looking for a new transmission for my 96 Honda Civic 5 spd. hatchback and it seems like there's a difference between transmissions for hatches and sedans- are there, and if so, why? What would the difference be? I assumed they were largely the same if not identical under the hood.

You should be able to use any 5-speed D series transmission. There are minor differences, so your best bet would be to find a transmission off a D16Z6 or D16Y8 (shortest gears).

Technically the Z6 is shortest but barely lol.

Id opt for a Z6 (92-95 EX/Si ) due to having aluminum shift forks.
