Best Oil

Just bought myself a 1999 EK1 Hatch with the D16Y4 engine and 165,000kms on it. I want to give it a service as soon as its in my hands, which oil would you all suggest is best. I'm new to the world of cars so I'd also appreciate any other suggestions for things I should do to service the car and make sure its running beautifully.

Honestly oil is oil. Any conventional will work fine if you plan to simply daily drive the car. Be mindful that its got 165,000km (~98,000miles). I wouldn't use a high mileage oil as it has additives to cause rubber seals to swell in an attempt to stop light oil leaks.

If you do not have any Noticeable oil leaks, you should be fine to use a full synthetic oil which is not only better oil quality but will allow you to go longer times between oil change intervals. Some full synthetics claim up to 10,000 miles between changes as long as you are not driving in "extreme" conditions. For the definition of "extreme" conditions, refer to your owners manual.

The best oil is whatever you have.
Type of oil will depend on the mileage of your car, and the condition of the motor.

Amsoil is based out of my town, and i'd love to use it in everything, but it's too damn expensive right now.

I'm currently running high mileage conventional/synthetic blends in most of my vehicles, because they're all above 200k miles, and tend to use/lose a bit of oil during use. the blends seem to be a little bit cheaper.

I've recently switched to Quaker State, because i can get a 5 quart jug of high mileage blend for $21 at Menards.
