s20 ex tranny vs s40 ex tranny

im looking for a 96 to 00 civic ex tranny but cant find one at a good price down here (seen them for as much as $600) but I do find alot of the 92 to 95 ex ones. are the gearing on these trannies the same
this is keeping me from finishing my swap

If your deciding on either a z6 or a y8 transmission, then find a y8 transmission

s20 and s40 are the same gearing wise. s20 has aluminum shift fork s40 is steel. s20 is out of 92-95 civic ex/si, s40 is out of 96-00 ex
