swapping auto Trans to manual

Do u have to change the ecu when swapping an auto transmission out to a manual. I'm not entirely sure as I haven't done it before but finding a manual that's not totally f'd is proving to be a challenge within the budget right now. Has anyone done this before on here?

You don't have to, but it's recommended. If you don't, P and D on your auto cluster will flash non-stop, which gets pretty annoying.
