1987 Civic Sedan 5 speed stalls when shifting into neutral at 35mph or higher

Please:

I've got a 1987 Honda Civic 4 door sedan with 1.5 liter engine and 5 speed transmission.

The engine dies when I downshift into neutral from 3rd or 4th gear at 35mph or higher -- when approaching a light, for example.

When working normally, the tachometer drops to about 800-1000, "catches" there, and steadies. Now . . . it just drops straight through to zero and the engine dies.

This doesn't happen from first or second gear . . . but I don't always want to downshift from 4th to lower gears and haven't had to do so in 25 years of owning the car.

Never have a problem when shifting UP in gear.

MAYBE A CLUE TO PROBLEM: I normally drive with lights on all the time . . . but the problem only occurs 1/4th as often often with the lights OFF (!)

I've had the alternator tested. Distributor and coil replaced. Choke adjusted. All carburetor hoses checked and replaced. Honda dealer had the car for 4 days and $900 and gave up without fixing the problem.
