aftermarket replacement for exhaust manifold?

my cast iron manifold has just cracked again for the third time. replacing it is expensive and doesnt really seem to solve much. there are several aftermarket replacements available with better characteristics at less expense but living in california i'm limited to what the state deems legal. curious to see how others are dealing with this?

Swap it when its time to get smog checked? I don't live in Cali but I know people that do this with other parts.
