My 1999 Civic Ex is currently having some issues. I cannot figure the problem out on my own. If someone with more mechanical knowledge could help it would greatly be aprreciate it. Well i have a 45mi. commute to work and recently when hitting the brakes after driving for 20mi. or so my lights will flicker radio will shut off MPH will drop down and the car almost completely shuts off. I already checked the charging system and that is all fine. Could it be my brake booster or possibly a vacuum leak??? Car has no CEL and idles fine. Any help or input will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

it does sound like a ground problem. The charging system may work fine but there could be a loose wire in the system some where. That is a strange problem.

check where at the alternator, the bigest bolt there. thats the main grounding source for the alt. ive seen them loose and cause flicker problems and also burn up a ecu.

Yes it does. It never shuts off it just cuts the radio and headlights off but the car itself never dies out all the way.

Headlights & Dash Lights DimWith Electrical Load
NOTE: This article applies to all Honda modelsexcept Passport.
Soon after the change from daylight savings time to
standard time (the last Sunday in October), Tech Line
gets numerous calls about flickering or dimming
headlights and/or dash lights when the brakes or turn
signals are used.
This flickering or dimming happens when the battery
is supplying most of the current for the electrical load
instead of the alternator (something a customer is
more likely to notice when their headlights are turned
on).

Since the early ’90s, Honda vehicles have come with
an electrical load detector (ELD) unit in the
under-hood fuse/relay box. This unit allows the
ECM/PCM to regulate the alternator (switch it
between high output and low output) to provide the
best combination of fuel economy and electrical
system operation. The ELD sends a signal to the
ECM/PCM that’s proportional to the electrical
demand. The ECM/PCM switches the alternator
between high output and low output depending on
several factors, which include electrical demand,
battery charge level, and the driving cycle. When the
alternator is in low output, the engine load is reduced
and fuel economy improves.
If your customer complains about this flickering or
dimming, tell them about the ELD unit and how it
works. Unless the engine won’t crank, or the vehicle
has other symptoms of a weak battery, chances are the
flickering or dimming isn’t an electrical problem.

Some good info thanks guys. On the grounding issue i checked all grounds and all of them are tight and making good contact. I was told by a mechanic that i could be my brake booster or a vacuum leak. Any input on that?

Vacuum leak??? Doesn't seem very likely...I had a vacuum leak in my 03 ex and all it did was idle differently.....

Found a vacuum leak today. Corrected the problem temporary and the car only died out once! I guess maybe this was the problem with the correct repair it wont do it at all, but we wont find that out untill we get it repaired correctly.

do u hear air leaking under the dash when u hit the brakes?
No i have not. I temporary fixed the vacuum leak i found and its worked fine so far so i guess that was the problem.
