Ok so I plan on building up a d16z6 that i just got over the winter. I have heard a lot of great things about the Crower stage 2 NA camshaft, But on their website it says that it Requires 84166 kit.(http://crower.com/cgi-bin/detail.cgi?prod_id=84166). is this really needed? Would stock springs be safe up to 7200 RPM?

BTW as of now I am planning on using pm6 pistons.

Well I'm not 100% sure but I would think the stock springs would be ok at 7200 as I have had both my y8, and z6 mini mes up there and didnt have a problem

At 7200 rpms with a stock cam, the internals should be fine. However, if you are putting in a stage 2 or higher cam, upgraded valvetrain is highly recommended as the lift and duration are raised (bigger cam profiles). I am rocking a y8 with a crower stage 2 with supertech valve springs and retainers. Haven't had a problem once in the 1 1/2 years I have had them.

I guess to better answer your question, yes, you probably can run a stage 2 cam without any further upgrades, but it is not recommended.

What's a good spring and retainers setup for cheap?
