this is the stock on i pulled off:

back of the throttle body plus other parts:

is this normal? i have always had a filter on, and it feels like oil. this is the first time changing IM on this car and engine, so it just got me a little worried.

It is normalish. Your PCV system is faulty or dirty. Oil fumes escape from your valve cover and feed into your intake tube after the filter, before the throttle body. The oil collects on the rough surfaces of the intake manifold.

An oil catch can will help alleviate this to a degree.

also, I could be mistaken, but even if your pcv is working perfectly, that will only account for oil from the crankcase.. You will still get vapors/oil from the valve cover.

my friend said its what makes your car idle higher when its cold, so the engine warms up faster. this is a learning experience for me, i want to be able to work on my car more by myself. but i was pretty stumped with this one.
