photoshop help

just wanted to ask teh photoshop experts on how you do this...the changing the color or one item and leaving the rest black and white or plain color...

example:

is that a black and white picture and they colored in the boy?

or is a color photo and they blacked out everything but him?

use the polygon lasso tool and carefully select everything you want to KEEP in color...after it is selected, right click, and press "select inverse"....then press CTRL + Shift + U at the same time (desaturate) and it will turn it into black and white

select what you want to be blk & white them go to image... & click on desaturate.... DONE! really like RandOm said.... after making the selection paste on it's one layer just incase you think it sucks

what if you want it sephia instead of black and white??? and what if there's a hole in the middle you gotta make black and white (or sephia) too? thanks again fellas!

i find it easier to duplicate the layer of the image you want to modify

desaturate or whatver effect you want on the backround, then lower the opacity and delete the parts where you want the original picture to show through

it's MUCH easier to do small parts with this method imo
the lasso tool can be a b***h :???:

oh, but to select the "holes" you need with the lasso tool, hold down the..... s**t... it's either shift or control key to add, and alt key to take away selected area
