Ok, I have really been thinkin about this... If i end up getting a ticket, it will cost me alot, and have that on my record... If i get a radar detector, it costs a lot, but supposably will save me from tickets. I have heard a billion stories of them, and some people say they work, some say they dont. Theres also the thing that the popos have laser radars now, instead of the old type, that once it goes off they already have you, and you are screwed. I wanna know if anybody here has one that REALLY works, and they actually have first hand experience with it working, not "ive heard it works". Ive been told that there are certain ones that work and alot that dont.

Thanks for the replies, i just would like to know whats the deal with radar detectors.

p.s. - please dont tell me i shouldnt break that law, because for the most part i dont, but theres times when everybody speeds or breaks the law in one way or another... dont tell me everybody here has never broken road laws before...

most higher end radar dectectors "work", as is detect the radar/lasar signal fine, but they won't automatically save you from tickets like some people think. 99% of the time common sense will beat a detector when it comes to effectiveness. if you have the extra money to spend though, they are good for extra assurance (when with other cars btw). if you buy one, get a valentine 1.

id get the k-40 they guarntee youll not get a ticket and if you do they will pay for it..althought the k-40 is $1100 and it is not visible to the naked eye its hidden in front and in the back of your cvar..it uses led tech. to detect all radar and laser... the only disply you have is 2 leds in your dash and a piezo speaker behind the dash...if you cant do this one id go with a v1 or valentine one it may be 400+ but it is worth it it blows the bell vector away on performance

Yea.. They work. I have a Cobra band radar detector. I forget what model I have , but I got one with 10 band frequency , voice activation , compass , 360 degree protection , VG2 detection , City / Highway modes , etc etc. Like someone else mentioned before , if you just use common sense , it's just an additional protection feature. Unlike me.. I'm a stupid chink. But without a doubt , this detector has saved me plenty of times just signaling that there is , or might be police presence ahead or around the area. I have mine mounted on the dash , and I usually drive with the windows rolled down. During the day time , It's just visable and at night.. I have a decently bright visual affect where if say a police officer is following me , they can usually tell that I have one and won't even bother with me. Oh.. By the way. I've never been citated for speeding ever and cost me around $200.

^^^ yeah the v1 is far better than bell and all the other lower, cheaper (price and quality) detectors. the k-40 sounds nice but 1100 will buy a lot of engine parts...and they may pay for a ticket if you get one, but can they take points off your license??? ;)

(chances are if you do get caught, the violation will carry points...)

Yeah, I have one. They do work, but you still have to use your head, and your eyes.

I have got a few tickets, one was a Sheriff coming around a corner and clocking me, one was an HP sitting on an onramp right past an overpass on the interstate, and one from a city cop sitting at an intersection gunning people by hand. I was not paying attention on the last ticket

they are only usefull if the cop has the radar gun on so if you live in an area with a lot of stationary cops, then you should be good.

 Laser detectors...what a scam

Against triggered on Lidar, you have almost no chance. If you live in a poor city/state and the motor cops still use Ka band, radar detectors work fine. The LIDAR beam is the size of a pencil lead and while you just might get a lucky bounce off another car being lased ahead the chances are still in the cops favor you won't. When my detector says LASER, I know I that the cop is already looking at my speed.

^^ yeah thats one of the big downsides to radar/laser detectors. if your flying along and your detector detects laser, basically all it warns you of is to get your license and registration out. again, the best security is a smart driver with common sense. not that you should drive around at 120+ mph all the time anyway. but everybody speeds...

Well yeah... i just worry cuz i do alot of like 60 in a 45... Never been pulled over yet, but then again only had my lisence for 2 months... I dont really go that fast, but i go faster than speed limits... On the freeway i never go higher than like 75 (80 on my speedo, its off by like 5 mph) and on the streets i do alot of like 60 in a 45, or 40 in a 30 and such... Its just soooo damn slow to cruise at like 45, and people get up on ur ass cuz ur goin so slow and s**t...

people get on your ass because everybody does at least 5 over the limit. a lot of people do even more than 5, like 40 in a 30 like you were saying. your not going to get pulled over for that stuff though. as long as you are keeping up with traffic a you shouldn't get pulled over, no matter how fast they are going. if traffic is going 40, go 40. if traffic is going 80, go 80. whenever you do speed for real though (and everybody does) just don't be a dumbass. its easy to put other people and yourself in danger, so just use your head. and if you are going crazy fast and being stupid and get caught, then, well, you deserve it.
