Speedometer intermittently working

hey guys!
i recently purchased myself a 1995 honda Civic Coupe 1.5 lsi.
now take the following into account: i know little to nothing about cars :D

the issue is, my speedometer sometimes tells me to shuv it, and drops to zero.
after a while, when he's taken a nap, it powers on again and works fine.

anyone have an idea as what this could be?
thanks in advance.

greetings,
Dieter "Doc"

Is the Check Engine Light on? It would be a wiring issue with the speed sensor, or the speed sensor itself. There could also be a power issue somewhere, do you have any other symptoms other than the speedometer not working? Dimming lights, etc.?

no lights, everything seems to be fine. just that sometimes it doesnt want to show my speed.

ive been thinking about fuses, because the radio and cigarette lighter don't work either, nor does the horn. so that was my first guess. going to replace all of the fuses, just to rule out a problem there.
other then that, the car runs fine.

Check whether the CEL works. If so, jump the service connector to see whether code 17 is stored in the ECU.

Did you check the horn fuse under the hood and the cig lighter fuse under the dash? Both are separate from the VSS (sending unit for speedometer) fuse, which if blown would prevent the engine from starting and running.

ok, so it won't be the fuse, because car starts fine.
there goes my theory xD

going to replace the fuses anyway, because new is better :D

i'll look into the CEL thing. thanks :D

If code 17 is not found, then the problem is likely the speedometer itself.

Also look for corroded pins in the VSS connector. That's a very common problem as well.

Ok, small update. It only seems to happen when i turn the engine off for a short while. i.e.: i leave for work in the morning, all good. Then stop to pump some gas, then it happens. Arrive at work and leave it there for 8hours. When i start it then, we're good

Does it have a aftermarket CD player? If so did you put it in or was it already in when you got it?

If it has an aftermarket CD player then a lot of the time the dimmer wire will get hooked up to the CD player and it will make that happen
