My hood release has been getting harder and harder to pull to get the hood to release. Recently I put some petroleum yelly on the plunger and moving plate it engages-worked well for a few times and now I'm stuck! I can pull the wire a good long way and lots of resistance but no pop!

You may have stretched the cable now, you'll have to buy a new assembly, which includes the cable and interior latch.
    Honda still sells them.
You'll now have to remove the bumper to get at the latch under the hood to release it.
