Temp Gauge Spiking. Need Help

I have a 1994 Hatch swapped out with a B18
Temp gauges are spiking with out the car over heating

It started with a rip in a hose, fixed the hose
then i noticed the temp gauge was spiking
once it reached the H, I drove for another 15 miles so i wouldn't get stranded
when i got home i notice the engine was not overheating
i checked the hoses and the bottom hose was a little cooler than the top hose
I switched out the thermostat. I'm still having the same issue
I checked and cleaned the ECT sensor, and sender.
Gauge is still spiking

Can anymore point me in the right direction, how to check to see if the sensor needs to be replaced
so i dont waste money if thats not the issue.:

Do the fans kick in? have you bled the cooling system?... you said the hose broke, air could have gotten in!

Check if it's a bad head gasket? Or of you have another cluster swap em out and see if it still happens?

^ that too
