unburned fuel

I got a 92 honda civic hatchback with a d16z6. Runs good but since I bought it smells like exhaust in the car when I down shift or let go of the throttle. Thinking maybe a leak somewhere but I'm not sure any help?? New at this!

Crawl under the car and check for exhaust header, cat, and pipe leaks.

Is there black soot on the rear bumper around the muffler pipe?

There's black soot at the tip of the pipe but not on the bumper. Is something I should worry about?

Could mean the engine is running rich. Any CEL codes? Last full ignition system tune up?

Also check for exhaust leaks.

Any CEL like Ron mentioned? Is the exhaust completely stock, perhaps the catalytic converter was gutted or you're running a test pipe. Take a photo of what you're working with if possible.
