The easiest way to hear it on an SOHC is to turn the music up loud (if you have a stock system). Go at WOT from a stop in 1st gear. That's the only way you'll hear it "kick" in. Sometimes I hear it kick in if I have another car next to mine, but at like 75% -80% throttle.
Oh - I forgot... having an intake helps (Preferably cold air.). You're not gonna hear it on the stock box.
Try this if you really care to hear it but I don't think it matters. Sometimes I think the D17A1 (non-VTEC) engines sound just as good... well, at least from the outside.
