I like very basic fonts and font colors. Black or white mainly. They are neutral colors and go well with a lot of other colors IMO. The sidewalk was too bright and it would've been hard to find a good color that wouldn't clash (IMO) with the rest of the picture. There isn't a lot of black in the picture and using black on the sidewalk to make it stand out or at least be readable would've made it look funky in my eyes.

Very true, simple is MORE. You could have just sampled an off color in the sidewalk so it would be similar yet still visible.
