How difficult is it to rebuild the engine and/or auto trans?

Hello all,

First time poster here. Anybody from Norfolk? I have an '05 automatic LX with 162k miles. She runs great.

I am wondering though for when that time comes - how difficult is it to rebuild the engine and/or transmission at home? I have done some simpler automotive stuff like spark plugs, brake pads, alternators, trans fluid, etc. I've heard that rebuilding engines and transmissions can require a lot of specialized tools and knowledge and I was wondering if that applies in our specific case.

That seems to be the consensus, but the rebuild kits seem so simple - just a few gaskets and misc. parts. Does it really require a big investment in time or tools? What about the motor?
