Ticking when idling- stops when the wheels are turned

We have a 2001 Honda Civic (114K). We just bought it and noticed that when it's driving it's very quiet, but when we stop (say at a stop light) and the engine is idling, we hear a ticking that is pretty consistent (kind of sounds like a card in the spokes of a bicycle). What is very odd is that if you turn the wheel it will go away, but if you straighten the wheels again it eventually comes back. Also when you press the accelerator it goes away again. Any ideas?!

Open the hood and use an engine stethoscope to pinpoint the source of the ticking while the engine is idling.
