1995 Honda Civic EX overheating

I drive a 1995 Honda Civic EX, and recently it has been spewing coolant out of the radiator and overheating. Also, the idle speed would fluctuate. We found that there was a broken radiator cap, and replaced it. We refilled the coolant and the car ran fine for about a day. Then, it all started to happen again only there is no coolant spewing. We replaced the thermostat and that did not help. We also have been trying to bleed out the air from the system, and there is a lot of steam in there. We could open up the bleeder screw, and there would only be steam coming out for several minutes. There is coolant in the radiator and resevior tank, it just may be getting caught somewhere. Does anyone have any idea what may be wrong with it?

yeah it seems to have a LOT of pressure built up

another question... what would cause a head gasket to blow?

how do you check if it is blown, and does it fit the symptoms( odd idle speed, steam when bleeding cooling system)?
my car is not boosted, actually right now the engine is bone stock
another thing... it takes forever for the heater in the car to warm up, it blows cold air for a long time

WIth the engine off, take the oil cap off and look in there with a flashlight. Try to see if theres any milky looking stuff in there, it would be the mixture of oil and antifreeze.. meaning water is getting into the crankcase.

You can run it by a local shop and have them do whats called a block test, which basically they just pull air from the cooling system through a chemical. And if it turns that chemical a different color (from blue to yellow) there is a presence of exhaust in the cooling system meaning youve got a blown head gasket.

Also if youve got a coolant system pressure tester, you can see if it will hold pressure..
