2001 Civic coupe engine blown

Hello everyone,

Very new to the room. I appreciate help with a few questions regarding my sons 2001 Honda civic. I haven't taken the car to the shop yet, but the oil on the ground and the rod knocking are pretty obvious clues that he blew the engine. I need to know what I can put back in the car and be SMOG legal in California. The original engine is the D17A, and I'm not looking for any increase in HP, just want the dang thing running again. Do I need to replace the engine with the same year engine, or can I go as far as a 2005? Any help with the questions would be very much appreciated.
