'91 civic LX wont start

1.5 engine. getting spark..exhaust smells like gas...tries to run if you hold the key but dies quickly when key is turned back.....Someone said the fuel pump because i told them that when the car gets down to 1/4 or less of fuel reading on gauge, car shutters and kills, like the fuel pump cant pick up anymore gas...I have 3/4 tank in there now....any ideas?

do you have a check engine light showing? any codes showing on the ECU?

no engine light showing. however, during yesterday's commute home, the cruise control light and the green light around the D (drive) dimmed then brightened back then dimmed a few times then came back full....car didnt kill thoough
