My new EJ (just getting started)

I wanted at least a rear camber kit. I'd rather have it and not need it than vise versa.

Yeah I like the stock intake better, too. I'll go with the top hats, sounds like its a good idea... just wasn't sure how well they got along with already shortened shocks. Now I know.

As far as the engine bay, I'll be cleaning it up a bit, maybe polish the valve cover... don't really want to paint it. A header is in the future but right now I'm focused on this suspension thing.

Thanks for the input, fellas.

Let me repeat, you won't NEED it. I'm down 5" and can go another full inch(1 of the lowest on this board). I do not have a camber kit, nor do I eat through tires due to alignments. I also do not have ROOM for a camber kit.

Camber kits are an after-market specialist' dream 'you must have this' product, to the people that don't do homework. While it doesn't hurt the car, it's not necessary on 95% of cars unless you're an extremist.

Yeah from what I've read and now experienced excessive toe is what will eat through your tires not camber, so all you need is an alignment. My current tires are nearing the wear bars and they don't have any camber wear. I'm around 2.2 degrees negative camber up front I believe

I've done my reading also, I know toe is the main issue, but in one of the large posts I read (can't remember if it was here or Honda Tech) they said a rear kit is a good idea because of how the rear suspension is set up.

As I said, I made the decision to go with one on the rear, I'm gonna stick to that decision.

This is my first time doing this and I want to make sure it's done right and I won't have any worries in the back of my mind about it. I'm not saying you didn't do it right, but right to you and right to me can be different.

You bought a spring designed for oem shocks, and you buy aftermarket shortened shocks to go with them. :what: The camber kit isn't a necessity but it won't hurt anything either. It will give you an extra reason to force another alignment if you make any adjustments to it just like changing ride heights.

what other suspension plans do you have

I don't trust having them on OEM shocks. People still seem to blow their OEM shocks with S Techs.

Why would I adjust it after the alignment shop has already set it?

Other plans are subframe brace, rear sway bar and new bushings for right now. I'd like to get new wheels/tires before any of that, though.

Most people still have the original shock on the car from the 90's...that's why. I never had a problem with my S techs back in the day. early 2000's in a 1999 ex.

You may adjust it for any driving you may get into, different wheels installed, different tires used, if you end up with adjustable suspension, 9 out of 10 times it's not dialed in just right from the start. Adjustments happen. Set it and forget it in car is pretty rare.

That's true, and I've thought about the fact that people are using their already tired shocks and throwing a fit because they blew. On top of that, though, I would like to be able to build up the new shocks/springs and have them ready to put in the car and have their own parts, if that makes sense. I don't want to have to take any parts from the shocks/springs that are already in the car.

It does make sense about having to adjust them when changing things like wheel sizes, etc. But it's not like I'll be getting in there and messing with the adjustments myself, I would have no idea what I'm doing.

Decided to install my springs today on my stock shocks, I've made up my mind that I'm going to get full coilovers, so I wanted to just put these on to have some low until then. Well, I hit a snag and now my front is low and my back is stock...

The allen hole on one of the rear shocks stripped out, so now I can't get the nut off to remove the spring. Not a happy camper.

Been lurking for a while, First post lol

Just use an impact gun and it'll zip it right off, no Allen needed.

Yeah that's what I've been seeing in my searching. I'm hoping to still be able to use the shock. I'll have to see if I can find a shop that is willing to hit it with an impact gun for me, since I don't have one. I'll have them do both while I'm there.

Thanks for the advice.

Success
Finally got my rear done this morning. Had to order all new struts, top hats, bushings. Impact gun wouldn't even budge the nut on the old strut. I'm just glad to finally have it done.

Next step = wheels with some offset.

4x4...

Goodness...

Looks pretty good to me. The camber in the rear could use some attention but it's not bad. Toe has been taken care of and that's the main concern

Yeah they showed me some paper that said "manufacturer did not specify rear camber specs" so I guess they didn't even try. I never did install the rear camber kit, it's on eBay lol.

You can't adjust rear camber without a kit on a civic
