I wouldnt recommend running a thicker oil until you start consuming oil at a unnatural rate. For our cars you can usually run Synthetic up to and around 120,000 miles. Then if you notice that you are consuming oil then bump up to the next level of viscosity.
IE: Your car recommends 5W-30 (2000 Honda Civic Si0
Then go up to 10W-30.
You can continue to use a full synthetic also if there is a heavier weight available or even a Sytntec Blend of same weight.
Additives are a great thing too. Synthetics have what is called Friction Modifiers which reduce friction between moving parts even more. Which is very good. They also come with Anti-Foaming and others.
