the knock sensor looks for your motor knocking (VERY BAD) when it senses this, it automatically retards your timing till it stops knocking.

From what my auto trades teacher told me, the knock sensor consists of an enclosed crystal that when disturbed by knocking sends a signal to I guess the ecu and retards the timing. So I'm thinking if you have a bad one, your timing could be screwed, which if I'm not mistaken affects your mpg and more importantly the overall wellbeing of the engine.

You should be o.k. till you put the new one on. Just make sure you're using high octane gas to help prevent knock.:thumbs up
